I'm always talking up thrift stores and how good they are for finding vintage Apple (and other brands, too) computers and accessories. I live in a great place with more thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, Value Village, etc, etc) within 10 minutes of me than I can count on both hands. I've made some pretty darn cool Apple-related finds in the past.
Recently I was at one of the aforementioned shops and I saw a few boxes of 5.25" diskettes sitting on a shelf. Getting closer, I was intruiged to notice they were still shrinkwrapped. Must be high density, I thought, and of no interest to me. When I finally picked one up, I saw they were FujiFilm double-sided double-density 5.25" floppies. There were three boxes of them, all in immaculate condition and still shrinkwrapped in original packaging with the original seller's pricetag. They were dated 1987. I bought all three boxes (10 count each) for use with my Apple II's. So far, I am not even through the first box but I have not encountered a bad sector yet. In the past, i have just recycled old no-long-used double-density floppies and I was finally running out so the finding was fortuitous. But the thing that got me the most was the feeling that I had discovered an ancient relic, a piece of history perfectly preserved from the ravages of time. I haven't seen double-density 5.25" floppies for sale on a shelf in probably 10 years at least. The ones I've seen for sale online are all previously used (though I admit I haven't looked *that* hard). It was kind of weird to think someone else had purchased these disks 17 years ago and just never used them. Then one day cleaning out that garage they came across the old disks and actually thought someone else might be able to use them rather than throw them away. Not quiet as cool as finding, say, some unused shrinkwrapped 8" floppies but still cool nonetheless. -Nat -- Apple2list is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Apple2list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/apple2.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/apple2list%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
