(Not very) Interesting Story from the Professional Apple II Software Seller days:

Beagle Bros duplicated all disks, including both 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch disks, in house on our own duplication equipment starting in the late 1980's or so.

We bought, in bulk, 5.25 inch disks that had only one notch (for smaller programs) and with two notches (for programs that required the space of a double-sided disk). The failure rate was about the same for both, so this led me to think that the "spinning the disk in the opposite direction will dislodge all the dirt in the pad" theory was hogwash.

Anyway, the distributors at the time called the single-sided disks "Floppies" and the double-sided disks "Flippies," presumably because you had to flip them yourself to use the second side, and they were slightly more expensive.

We cut notches in Floppies to make the Flippies all the time for our personal use...
