About the reliability of the "second" side of 5 1/4" disks: all 5 1/4" PC
drives (except the very first ones) have two read/write heads, thus being able
to use *both* sides without flipping or notching. Because of that, most
manufacturers allways made "double sided" disks, even if they had only one
notch. Most disks will say "double side, double density" or "DS/DD" in their
labels. And I'd bet that almost all disks that don't say it are really double
sided: I'm an Apple II user from 1984, and have never found a single sided
disk.
