Most of the disks that I have picked up at second hand stores still can be read
if they have data on them. Unfortunately, those disks which were heavily copy
protected, what? 1 in 20 that they work? That also goes for the 3.5 floppies
as well. That's why I always made dups to put in the classroom, and never put
the original in any of the classrooms. Call it illegal, what you may, but ...
the Learning Company heavily copy protected theirs. You bought the disk or
sometimes a disk and a backup, 20 kids in a classroom have 200 fingers. Lose
both disks, then they would charge you the 60 price you've already paid.

Sadly, ... new laws were made when it came to digital media, and the laws
favored the companies, though "God" would have ruled against them. The last few
years of Apple's reign, Mindscape came out with disks that could be copied 5
times, and that was it. That was a bit better. I checked-out an educational
program from a college and put it in the classroom. I showed the teachers and
kids how to use it, what not to do and what to do. After recess, two kids
fought over whose turn it was on the computer and bent the disk into boomarang.
I didn't check out any more disks.

I find even brand new Apple IIe software in second hand shops for 1.98, which
brought 50 in the old days. For several years in the 80s, I was rewarded free
tuition at a University when I had a review of education programs. I think I
took between 10 and 20 free credits at that college. When we were presented
with the reviews, I said, "Hey, I can do that." Everyone boos. Then next time
we met, no boos but logs of congratulations. Sadly, ... those days are over.
