I've been using my 2.2GB ORB drive for disk image storage on my IIgs with Apple High Speed SCSI card for a while now. It works pretty nice, just one big 2.2GB HFS partition. The IIgs just uses it's normal scsi hard drive driver to see the ORB drive.Hi, y'all!

My question:
Can you merely connect a (SCSI) Zip drive, and it works on a IIgs (with Apple
HS SCSI card) without any driver software?
Yes! As a matter of fact, you can use a SCSI Zip drive with an Apple revision "C" SCSI controller card. Even the 250MB size drive.
However, to partition a Zip cartridge with a rev. "C" card, you'll need the version of Chinook SCSI Utilities that I modified, that's available on Bill Garber's site.

Before I got my 250MB hard drive hooked up I had the ORB set up with one 32MB ProDOS partion and one large HFS partition for the rest of the space and was using it as my boot drive.
I'd give you a link to castlewood's website but they filed for chapter 7 bankruptsy a while ago and it no longer exists... A shame since my ORB drive has been tons more reliable than any Iomega product I've ever owned. Oh well... some stores still have them in stock.
