Ok, so my question remains - how can I initialize my 3.5 disk to be used with
basic ?

As I said earlier, almost all DOS-based programs (and some non-DOS ones
also) can be run under ProDOS off raw disk images with a "DOS emulator"
(can't remember the name), so this may be the solution for your problems.
But you would have no Integer Basic support, because it would involve
loading the Integer Basic interpreter in the "language card", the same
memory space the ProDOS kernel uses.

On the other hand, old Integer Basic program files *can* be copied to
ProDOS disks... Early ProDOS versions even has an 'INT' filetype for them
(in later versions it was replaced with a IIgs-specific filetype, I think
it was 'S16' or something like that). Seems like Apple intended to make an
Integer Basic-compatible ProDOS version, but those plans got scrapped.

Anyway, almost all of the old programs are not directly compatible with
ProDOS, so there's no sense on tranferring them to ProDOS volumes.

yes, but it won't copy any disks with basic files or programs that are
not dos based.

Yes, I understand that but source disk has to be prodos formatted as
well - is that right ?
ProDOS' System Utilities can copy files from DOS 3.3 and Pascal disks
into
ProDOS disks (I think Pascal support was dropped in later releases,
but I'm
not sure), so the source disk doesn't have to be ProDOS formatted.
