The patent has expired, the last I heard. (These days it is hard to tell though since so many IP laws seem to apply retroactively.) I don't know if that would have been an issue anyway. Something like the IIgs would have had a lot of trouble decompressing the images. You would be better off just dumping the text to the screen. (Something along the lines of what Google does.)
