Actually, I found a service on adobe's website that'll convert a pdf 
that's hosted on a website to text.  Using my shell account, I can then 
"print" the resulting page to a text file on my homespace and use the file 
from there.

Not as usable as actually reading a PDF on my own computer, but it does 
help.  :)
