Any computer newer than the GS will not use an external drive alder
than the 800K (720K, whatever) 3.5" floppy drive.  In fact I've read
that using the 5.25" external drive an a new computer has potentially
damaging effects as the control mechanisms are fundamentally diffirent
-- I believe it was from an Apple source but could have been some
other authoritative source.  It is certainly possible that if you
indeed tried using the 5.25" drive first, then you might have stressed
the drive controller beyond repair.  Sorry for the bad news.  I hope
you can find me wrong.
