: I remember the Applied Eng. device (same as the PlusCard?) : which had a rechargable gel battery that sat outside the : computer. Major league 15 years ago. :)
How much space? : Only in the fact that it's flash memory--the battery backup : keeps the info available all the time for an "instant-on" : computer, right? The CFFA/microdrive setups still have to : go thru a standard setup sequence--faster than a hard drive, : but I'd love to see the time difference between one of those : and a PlusCard. :) Not possible. It has been discussed in CSA2. The Apple II does an initialize routine that wipes everything, and if it can't whatever is there would be scrambled. Best you can hope for is a ram drive that would reload everything anyway, just faster. Yes, the CFFA and alike drives go through init routines, as do any other drives. They have to. The Apple II looks at the slots one at a time starting at 7 and working down to 1, then chooses the highest slot with a boot drive and begins to look for valid data on that slot. How can you make something instant on unless the computer comes on looking at that area initially, and uses it barring everything else.
