It's quite the other way around: Having to deal with some strange server-side 
implementations of the HBCI protocol I learned not to trust the server to 
always deliver the data I expect or even require :-)

So having a fallback is quite important especially with HBCI. You might be 
surprised how many different kinds of SWIFT MT940 I encountered, and still 
the banks surprise me occasionally :-)
