Best" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Endless download on http://www.cdw.com Thomas, This is the "endless download" bug spoken of "just a second ago" on the list. To answer your questions: 1. I went there & found the bug 2a. No, not ill luck 2b. Yes, bug & page I have another page that routinely gives me problems like this. Maybe some day someone can get together a collection of page codes for the "problem children" and figure out why Arachne misbehaves so badly on certain js pages? There is a fix, and something to watch for to know that the "emergency bailout" is called for. 1. These pages always download in chunks of X,000 bytes; not all pages that download in chunks of X,000 bytes are bad but the bad pages *ALWAYS* do. So be warned if downloads start that way; 2. Watch the bottom line; if it clears for no reason and then jumps in size of current download by 40-60,000 bytes, this is a buggy page warning. For me the CDW page jumped from 88,000 to clear line to 148,000 bytes. 3. When that jump occurs, hit "I" for Inbox or "H" for hotlist. The download may not stop immediately, but you should at least see the size of the download increment by 1 byte each time you hit "I" or "H" (I just noticed that yesterday<G>)... from 148,000 to 148,001 etc. It may take 3 or 4 tries, but eventually the inbox or the Hotlist will load. At that point, hit the "back" arrow and you will see the message "Loading Page from Disk" on the status line; you will also see that a number of other files are being downloaded (if you have in-line images at YES). At that point a pageUP or pageDOWN or even the space bar will write the guilty page to the screen and you can then decide if you want to allow graphics to continue downloading, or stop the download and view page "as is." It would be great if someone at Arachne Labs paid a bit of attention to this problem. :< Even the behavior I've outlined about *might* help someone who cared figure it out. But until there is a fix, there is at least a way to handle it. l.d. ==== On Wed, 23 May 2001 04:29:10 -0400 (EDT), Thomas Mueller wrote: > I just tried to browse http://www.cdw.com with Arachne, running on a VDISK > (which is DR-DOS's name for ramdisk) in DR-DOS 7.03, and it downloaded until it > passed 8000000 bytes, when it paused to buzz my Iomega Zip 250 (which is drive > C as currently configured with regular hard disks inaccessible), then downloaded > some more, in several steps, alternating with buzzing the Zip 250. [was Re: Down with windows] We have all, at some time in our modeming lifetimes, been in a position where a large file [anything over 50K] was nearly impossible to download short of a dozen or so tries, and often even then failed. I personally found that 1.66 was the best working Arachne past 1.50, but I have a "high end" machine. What would be good is for people who have equivalent computers to the King's hash out which version in the 1.60s works best... once that decision was made, it would be relatively simple to "take apart" the exe version and break it into more easily handled packages which could be downloaded relatively quickly, even with a 14.4 modem. [I lived with 2400 so long, I thought 14.4 for long distance access was fantastic!! <G>] You guys fight it out among yourselves, and then I'll volunteer to break up the correct version [if I have it or someone can point me to it in the archives] into smaller files and make them available via direct URL. I'm volunteering primarily because my ISPs servers don't get the hit load that Angelfire or other web-based 'webpage sites' do, and because my ISP offers just about the fastest cleanest internet connectivity that can be done ... [what's twice as good as T1 lines??] ... so there would be less chance of server drop-out on my end. So you guys fight it out, let me know which verision "Seek" should try, and then we'll see if we can get him up and running on Arachne that's even better than his first experience. l.d. ==== On Wed, 23 May 2001 15:02:14 +0000, Seek Hey - King of Padua wrote: > On Wed, 23 May 2001 07:56:13 +0200, Bernie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> turned > his brain on and wrote: >> You can still download it, it will just take a while. > yes, but everytime the servers break the connections :(( <snip> - -- Arachne V1.70;rev.3, NON-COMMERCIAL copy, http://arachne.cz/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 20:13:47 +0000 From: "Mel Evans, Registered Arachne User" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Help the kid out! Unfortunately, Win3.1 is even deader than DOS and I can't imagine anyone bothering to write Win3.1 specific drivers as the entire Windows contingent has long since migrated onward and upward. Isn't there a capable DOS graphics program? What's it called Graphics Workshop for DOS, or something like that? But maybe that doesn't have up-to-date video drivers anymore. Recently, google has added an option to post also. In order to post from google, you must first register with an email address (google specifically recommends acquiring a throwaway account on any of the free email services). I attempted to register using Arachne, but it does not work. There are 4 fields to fill in--email address, name, and password twice--and one radio button to accept the terms of service. Every time I fill in the form and try to submit it, I get back a response that some info is missing. The response shows my name and email address, but the password fields are blank, and the "no" button (for accepting TOS) is checked instead of the "yes" button. No matter how many times I correct the form and resubmit it, I keep getting the same error. Sorry to have disappointed you. ;-) I'll try to find an uglier photo to upload.<VBG> > Just wait till you see my mug shot. I will look even much uglier than > you think I am! Looking forward to seeing your "ugly mug". ;-) L.D. Please, ask your son to scan a higher quality photo. - -- Glenn http://arachne.cz/ http://freedos-32.sourceforge.net/ http://www.delorie.com/listserv/mime/ http://www.angelfire.com/id/glenndoom/download.htm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 03:00:08 -0400 (EDT) From: "Thomas Mueller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [SurvPC] So long- why (begin quote) I don't know what you mean. Horizontal scrolling works exactly the same as vertical scrolling and seems to be exactly the same speed as well, at least for me. Downloading doesn't seem like a problem either. The big problem is that much of the web has migrated to complicated and unfortunate graphic schemes and methods that Arachne can't handle yet. Sam Ewalt (end of quote) Horizontal and vertical scrolling with Arachne have been slow and clumsy all along; first Arachne I used was 1.47. Horizontal scrolling is a nuisance with probably any browser. How do you make Arachne download without attempting to display? I think there is a way to download in background, then go fishing in the cache, only sometimes the fish gets away, at least it did from me once, when I never could find the 2 MB download. << Interestingly, Thomas's posts have often used a line length requiring horizontal scrolling on a 640x480. Regards, Jake >> I don't need horizontal scrolling on my own messages, I usually am on a screen 80 characters wide, and I try to keep lines within 80 characters, except when there is something that is better not broken, such as a long URL. But I have been able to view much longer lines in Arachne without horizontal scrolling, since Arachne word-wraps email messages. from Steven of NZ: > What about a mini-Linux running from floppy? When I boot the installation diskettes, Slackware 7.1 or Debian, boot hangs at "loop: registered device at major 7". I don't know if that's due to faulty floppy drive interface, or a bug in the Linux kernel possibly related to Trantor T130B SCSI support. Trying LOADLIN might help answer that question. DR-DOS boot from drive A is slower than it used to be. > Don't forget Galeon (a slim version of Konqueror) and Opera > (available in free and non-free versions). There is also Emacs W3, though I don't know if that is being developed any further. Arena seems to have fallen into desuetude. Where might I find Galeon? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 03:00:11 -0400 (EDT) From: "Thomas Mueller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Down with windows from Seek Hey: It's alright, but how can I download it with a 14400 modem?? o__O I just found this old version on a floppy disk so I didn't had to download it.. I know, newer versions are quite better than mine, but they're IMPOSSIBLE to download with this 1993 modem.. anyway, what is your version? and what are its features? just curious. Byeeee, Fede. (end of quote) Download speed in my experience with 14400 modem was 80000 bytes/minute under favorable conditions. With CompuServe, I was lucky to get 52000 bytes/minute. So downloading Arachne should take about 13 minutes. << However, I must caution you that v1.70;r3 has one very nasty bug. The "run-away download" bug is a real killer. :(( For that reason, my advice is to try v1.69 instead. http://browser.arachne.cz/browser/old/archn169.exe - -- Glenn >> Glenn, is that what happened to me when Arachne went bananas on http://www.cdw.com and downloaded up to 8400000 bytes, though it didn't show on any disk, not even in the cache or TMP directory? ------------------------------ End of arachne-digest V1 #1531 ******************************
