Hi Fede

I wonder how could Microsoft detect that you were using an ilegal copy
of W95. This should send shivers ? through everybody using ilegal
copies of OS. Here in Brazil piracy is so widespread that I can find in
downtown Sao Paulo copies of W95, W98, WNT4, W2000, Wme, Wxp or whatever

Dear Gregy:

I appreciate your openness and experience with these matters.
I did not know that you installed software for a living {or do you
manage software needs for dialups?}. I found that my brother-in-law
had similiar problems with his ISP, so after some hard attempts by
him and me to use the "earlier" {that is Arachne versions up to
1.66} packages, he just gave up and said it wasn't worth the expend-
iture of time. I told him that Arachne could still work, but it
requires special drivers and a seperate dialer package. I still
have no time to attempt a connection using Surfbest. I don't have
any time to go up there and I would have to get another ISP account
to even try it out. It will probably fall by the wayside for quite
a while. He eventually decided to use the Win 32 version of Opera
and was quite pleased with it, although he still hasn't registered.
I agree with you that for Arachne to be competitive with Netscape
it must have 'Netscape-like' features, while avoiding the bloat.
It already has some, but that is not the problem. In the main,
it does not have openSSL encryption, nor does it have a wide range
of ISP's it can use. I mean, ISPs that will probably be in business
after 2 years. We have seen a lot of ISPs come and go and all the
work on establishing connections based on them is moot now. They
are out of business. I am going to make an effort to try to setup
the SSHDOS APM client package to use with Arachne, but I don't know
how sucessful it will be. And right now I must work on other things.
Glenn M. on the List claims all the APM's work just fine. I question
his reasoning as the average user just can't understand and implement
OOK files and the necessary add-on installations easily. Maybe
SSH-dos client can be more easily set up as a seperate SECURE browser
client {outside of Arachne directory}. I just don't know yet.
Also, I wonder if some features of secure technology don't require
a lot of RAM. I think probably, YES. That is why I don't like over-
committing myself to a definite timetable.

Dear List:

This stuff about 'secure' plug-ins for Arachne is good. I tried to
use the Dos Lynx386 browser to accesse and had some success the first
go round. But later I had more problems. An error page said no HTML
page was returned. Those at Earthlink are freezing out us DOS users
by preferring Windows browsers. However, I will try again to use Lynx
from time to time. I wonder what the results will be. My version of
Lynx has the OpenSSL code hard-wired into it. And this is the result
of a preference, it appears, for Windows 95 with Earthlink technical
support team. I have not looked into alternate "schemes" to get
HTTPS access. If the secure server requires HTML, then how can plain-
text DOS browsers compete?

   I would agree with L.D.

I have installed and run almost every version of Arachne since 1.1.

Although I do have 1.70r3 installed, I hardly ever use it. I find it
unstable, sadly.

My "workhorse" browser is Arachne 1.66, with its original version of
Insight. In spite of Bernie's misgivings, this Insight has worked just
fine. The only time I use another DOS email client is when my regular
ISP goes down and I have to use my secondary ISP which really doesn't
get along with Insight and Arachne.

there is still stuff being written. Remember, DOS stuff "usually" runs

You are perfectly correct, Glenn. But I enjoy being paranoid. :)

And sometimes, when I am a little careless, pickled, or just showing
off, I click more often than I should. So I am ultra-careful. My TEMP

Arachne's MIME.CFG, I have F-PROT for DOS, and I am subscribed to VET

If you have WWW access, downloading Arachne by http is actually less of a
download than receiving by e-mail. Uuencode or base64 multiplies file size
by 4/3, as 4 bytes encoded take the place of 3 bytes original. I've been
successful downloading Arachne with DOS Lynx386.

Thanks to L.D. Best for tips on escaping the endless download. I wonder what,
if anything, was really being downloaded.

On accessing Usenet through Google, might Arachne also be able to access Usenet
through MailAndNews (http://MailAndNews.com , requires registration)?

Hi list and King of Padova,

Arachne does an excellent job with all online activities. But for
reading and composing of messages the graphical interface is
unnecessary and too slow as well. If you can afford to read your
mail online and call inserted links it makes sense to use
Arachne (if you connect with a modem this will be rather
expensive).

If you do 'real' work with email, you might consider So you may
consider another way. Let Arachne upload and download your
messages, but edit, sort, compose, and archive them with another
program. All you have to care for is that the files to be sent (.TBS)
match the format known to Arachne.

I consider Pegasus Mail for DOS (PMail) to be the best email client
for DOS. It offers such a rich possibility of customizing
(codepage conversion, menu, mime plug-ins, adapting the message
formats and file names). It is able to sort a huge amount of incoming
mail according to addresses and subject lines. You can even run an
unmoderated mailing list with this feature. PMail's flexibility
makes it a very good complement to Arachne: Arachne does the online
jobs POP3 and SMTP. Pegasus is quicker and more practical for offline
reading, composing, sorting.

If you like to setup PMail for use with Arachne and need any
hints, please ask be free to ask Dale Mentzer or me (on this list or
probably to private e- mail).

BTW a further question:

Arachne like every other browser will always need to have some kind
of e-mail module. Otherwise she would not be able to proceed all
those mailto-links. But would it not be possible to hand mailto-links
over to another program, eg. PMail?

Hi Folks

This sextuplication of messages requires an explanation and an apology.

Actually I composed the message with Pegasus 3.50 and was sending it using

Arachne 1.66. I actually intended to send it once but for some reason

I can't explain I entered into a mode by which each time I clicked into

the "previous page" (left) arrow, I sent a message, so I guess after

seeing the problem I exited Arachne and entered again.

Again I am sorry but it was not my fault, I probably still don;t know

to handle Arachne properly.

yes...we can sort of "customize" an install, with "the-best-of-the-best"
(pun definitely NOT intended...not even contemplated) for Seek...
(..and..if you believe that....well...there's this bridge...<g g g>)

I think we can just use the .CFGs and .ACFs from 1.70r3, the 1.66 core.exe
and etc should work okay with that.
...LATER.....
In fact, upon more thought....we'll just use the 1.70r3 install, with
the 1.66 core.exe substituted on that, plus substitute any of the
other "choice" pieces of the earlier installs.

1. We can "zip" up the empty directory structure for Arachne using:
.....X:\ARACHNE\xcopy *.zzz x:\arachne\dir\ /e /s
2. We can zip up the contents of each major directory..and/or group
of directories.
3. We send Seek the zipped up empty directory structure.
4. We send Seek the individual zipped up packages..
....NOTE - something along these lines will probably work best for him.
BUT...he must understand that he MUST do this as an additional installation
on his current working computer box. Totally as a separate installation, or
we might end up breaking his working install.
...Since Seek was running Winzz, he undoubtably has a box with enough RAM
and other resources to let him do multiple Arachne Installations..

l.d.,
I think we got a "possible" here..........<g g g>...we can break it up
into attachable size, and email it all to him in bits and pieces..

.........gregy

PS....once we get him set up with that, we MIGHT try emailing him some
of the .APMs, if we can come up with a working setup for him to install
them manually from his local drive (or install them automagically from
his local drive - something I haven't yet accomplished, and for which
I am still irritated).

et al,

Seek's query to Bernie about using Eudora...

l.d.'s recent struggle to get her cable connection up an running...

my recent struggle to get one (plus many additional) clients up
and running on a recalcitant ISP...

These all illustrate the diversity of software/hardware/connections
we are dealing with. I don't know a simple (simplistic..?) answer
to these things. BUT, I do know, that, while Winzz appears to be
handling these all in its stride, this is NOT so...W9x is a very
heavy cottage-industry for me, and could be very lucrative, if I
wanted to exploit it. Winzzz (and other OSs) has probably as
many problems as DOS/Arachne...it's just that there are more
people working on them, so they get solved quicker...and...some
things (e.g. multitasking) are IMPOSSIBLE in DOS...

We should keep reminding ourselves of this...so we don't get
frustrated with people struggling to fix something we can't even
really understand, since WE don't have THAT problem...<g g g g>

L.D. and Gregy,

UUENCODE from Richard Marks (freeware) will automatically break large files
up into 50K units, unless told not to do so using the option, -s. UUDECODE
from same source will reassemble the file in the proper order.

I can provide a ZIPped copy Richard Marks' freeware UU program. If it comes
thru UUencoded, you should be able to decode it using the UUDECODE program
that comes with Arachne.
