et al,

I just sent Seekhey the ARCHN170.EXE as an email attachment...I know
it went, 'cause I saw it go...

My ISP wuuuuvs me...!!!...actually he lets me do just about anything
like this I want to do....someone tried to receive a 200Mbyte email
attachment, once, and jammed up all the servers, except the main
portal server, and he got a bit miffed, but other than something
like that, he just lets us jump in and try the water to our hearts
content.....<g g g >

Seedhey should get back to me later today and let me know if the
attachment got through....

If it did, then we are one step closer to SeekHey's install...BUT
we need to get instructions ready, as to how he should install it,
where, his file-directs (e.g. f:\mail\, i:\cache\, etc.

I think we all agree that Arachne runs best from an approximately
12Mbyte, or bigger, RAMDisk. Installed this way, Arachne is the
fastest Downloader on the whole web, as far as dialup ISPs go.
..and even 14.4 should be reasonably fast.

I want to bundle/edit them all as a compilation of "NewbiesHelp"

After we have SeekHey up and running, and edit these, we can give

for a "typical" optimum installation.

Of course. Actually I'm not into programming very much, but AFAIK it's a bug
in the CRT library of TurboPascal 5 and/or 6, or similar. Effectively this
means that if you run the program on a "fast" machine, usually faster than
150-200 MHz, the program aborts with this Runtime Error.

Some programs can easily be fixed using a small, universal patch program,
sometimes called TPFIX.EXE or similar, but CShow2000 can't, probably due to
it has been compressed and/or encrypted. Another solution is to simply slow
down the computer by emulating a 386 at 100 MHz or so. There are slow-down
programs around. One is written by a guy named Bret Johnson (I *think*
that's his name :-), and is about 35kB.

If the list is interested, I can either try to find the URL to his web site,
or send the program to someone on this list who can put it for download on
his/hers own web site (Bernie? Gnter? Michael?)

Oh, btw, sorry for using M$OE ;-)

Sure, that's the idea about using sendmail in Linux. As it is now Arachne
(core.exe) handles all the sending/receiving, not insight.exe

Actually in pratice this shows to not be correct. The problem comes when
you use a Pentium Pro class CPU with those speeds. CPUs that are affected
are: Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Duron and
Thunderbird. For instance an AMD k6-2 will still run those programs fine
even if you are well above 200MHz.

I think "moslo" is the program you're looking for. Searching for it on
Google and "feeling lucky" we get: http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/ Ah, how I
love a search enginee that works (as opposed to Altavista). But it isn't
made by the same author so you must refer to something else.

I think that 2Show runs OK on a Pentium MMX also ... at least that's
what my son has been using to do game reconstructions, and I haven't
heard him whine to me once about the program not running correctly. The
Pentium MMX is a different architecture from the II group IIRC, even
though it can crank out a respectable 223 or 233 MHz ..

Slowdown program are out there ... I've had them since I switched from
8088 to x86. But some of them don't work at all on 386+ machines. I
haven't found one yet that's reliable enough to get stored in my

I only resist their desire to dominate the world by introducing

But if you look at their bank account they are probably right.

What about if I need Adobe Acrobat or SSL or a page with javascript.

Windows is very convenient cheap, widespread, easy to use, lots of

programs for it. It is an OS made for whoever doesn't want to know

Arachne works moderately well with mailandnews, but there are a few
gotchas to watch out for.

I don't recall now whether I was able to create a new account using
Arachne or whether I had to use some other browser.

Once the account is created, reading mail with m-and-n requires that
you turn cookies OFF. For some stupid reason, if they're on,
mailandnews will burden you with some unnecessary javascript, and
you'll have to keep editing out less-than signs in order to read any
msgs.

Writing msgs is more of a problem. If you use the "default template"
interface, any msg you write and send will go exactly nowhere, though
you won't get any kind of error indication. If you switch to a
different interface (text-only is fastest and looks good), then you
can send msgs.

News in mailandnews is like email--you'll get a "folder" in which
each msg can be read and deleted separately. The msgs sit on the
mailandnews host and don't take up space on your hard drive, but
access can be very slow sometimes.

The big advantage of google is you can see a whole thread at one
time, and you can reply to any msg within the thread. (To keep the
html downloads from getting too big, only 10 msgs are displayed in
any one html page, and very long msgs are separated also so you can
conveniently read just what you want.)

In short, mailandnews does work with Arachne. But given a choice
between the two for news, my personal preference is google.

Hi Luis and All;
No need to apologize for pointing out a possible problem with Arachne, Luis.

It seems at one time I suggested that the annoying trait Arachne has of
repeating the last action (download, get email, send email) after hitting
the back button (ESC in my case) could be the cause of some of the many
repeat messages we get, but I was told it was impossible.

Nothing is impossible with Arachne. <G>

I now have a huge collection of two whole pages which will consistently
cause the "runaway download syndrome" and which can be broken out of
using the "I" or "H" with perseverence.

At first glance, other than the presense of javascript, I find nothing
which jumps out at me as weird & shared by both pages.

I need a larger collection so I can refine the possible causes, so I'm
hoping that everyone using 1.70r3 who runs across a site guilty of
triggering "runaway download syndrome" will save the URL and let me know
... only that way can I amass a collection 200 or 300 percent larger.

Quite unlike its well known and highly inferior competitors among browsers
designed for WIN 95, the Opera browser, version 5.02, will resume
interrupted downloads, just as with ZModem transfer on BBSs. I have tried
it and tested it and it does work. With Opera you can even abort the
download and close the browser and hangup the modem. Then you can dial up
again and log on to your ISP, open your Opera browser, access the download
page, and resume your download where you left off. Amazing!

So, for this reason and many more, if you must at times resort to using a
Windows browser, I would recommend Opera as being far superior to any of
the others.

Does anybody know what happens with Arachne Insight when an incoming message has
a line of 1024 or more characters? I sometimes get a message with one or more
lines having 1024 characters, but not more; once saw a spam message in a
newsgroup with one line > 1400 characters. Net Mail for DOS gets stuck on such
an email message, just appends spaces and newlines forever, until the user hits
Ctrl-C. OS/2 port of popclient would download up to and including the message
with the 1024-long line, then halt for segment violation, and that message would
remain on server despite having been downloaded successfully. Then I had to use
UKA_PPP aka NOS-BOX for rescue.

This also points-out another problem in v1.70;r3
After using Cntrl+enter, all of the links on the page are "dead".
We must leave the page and come back to it in order to bring

After doing that, we can then take the same link again and the

Where does the downloaded page or file go, and do you choose the file name to

are dumb enuff to think everyone has a T1 connection, but it must be
true - THEY PUT TWO HUNDRED & FIFTY-SEVEN IMAGES ON THE PAGE !!

If you dare to visit:
http://iwebs.upol.cz/iss/galerie_sts98.htm
even *WITH* a T1 connection, don't expect much from Arachne.

She will happily waste your time downloading the thumbnails, and then
just sit there and do NOTHING when finished. I suppose that's better
than crashing. If you surf your cache and ask for an image gallery,
she will have to be poked a few times to start, and then will convert
only a small part of the images in cache.

Arachne 1.62 will convert (on my P90) 98 out of 257, present red boxes
for about 100 more (not counted) and then fill the rest of the page with
the message "Too many images converted" for each of the remaining files.
At this point only about 25% of my available TEMP space on Ramdisk has
been used.

Think I should use a later version ?
I went straight to A1.70r3. I found it much more difficult to prod her
into doing it, but when activated this version would only convert 47
images. Switched to A1.66. I found this version to be a little easier
to bring to life, but I only got 47 images out of 257 here also.
Back to A1.62 (with the .BMPs in TEMP cleared). A recheck confirmed
that A1.62 would do 98 of 257, and only required a manual conversion
of one file to teach her what to do.

Seems A1.62 is the best in this area, but I've run into several pages
lately while on Hollywood patrol with more than 98 images on them.

*

Here's a little comparison for you:

Using Netscape 2.02 on a 33Mhz '486 (NO ramdisk) that page downloaded
in 8 min 36 sec @ 31200 and the screen displayed IMMEDIATELY although
NS cranked the disk for about another minute while it created all the
off-screen images.

Arachne on my *P90* with the same ISP and at the same baudrate took
9 min 21 sec to finish downloading the images and deciding to do no
more. A later experiment with a shortened page indicates she would
have taken almost two minutes more to display the page if she had
been up to it.

As a matter of interest, she will get the page with images OFF
in only 17 seconds.
I've had a little luck downloading with images off, editing the page
into thirds and then selecting one image for display. Arachne will
download the shortened list of images after displaying that image.

Hi Curtis and all,

I tried DOS multasking, too, but without success. It seems that DR-DOS
stops any traffic at serial or ethernet ports when switching to an other
task. I also tried mt.com with wget.exe and dss.exe and it doesn't work
'cuz wget run exclusive and mt was not able to start a second task.

Sure, Greg! I just installed it (I had the same version on floppy, but
uudecoding yours would be quicker) and then installed and used it. It is
circa identical to this version.. only the fonts are bigger and there
are some more bugs.. anyway, i'll move into it on the next days. THANK
YOU VERY MUCH GREG!!!

Byeeeeee! Fede.
