I didn't say to integrate arachne with outlook or eudora, but just to
completely or partially redo the mailing portion of Arachne..

Fede,

Okay, now I will send you the CORE.EXE for Arachne versions 1.66 and
1.69.
They will be renamed to CORE166.EXE and CORE169.EXE.

You must copy your existing Arachne version 1.70r3 CORE.EXE to
CORE170.EXE.

Then you will have three CORE.EXE files, and you can manual copy
any one of them over the CORE.EXE file in X:\ARACHNE\ directory,
depending upon your needs.

Or you can write a simple CSWAP.BAT with 166, 169, and 170 sections.

Fede,

ByeTheWay.....that ARCHN170.ZIP I sent you is NOT really a file with
the extension .ZIP....it is really a file with an extension of
.EXE....I only renamed it to be sure your ISP would let it go through.

1. You must first rename that file to ARCHN170.EXE...then

2. Run it (i.e type "archn170") from the ROOT of the drive you
want to install it on (e.g. C:\>).

3. It is a self-extracting zip file which will extract/install
itself.

I'm not certain whether the problem is the way the map is referenced
[actually there are two "maps" on this page], whether it's the long
lines of code necessitated by polygon coordinates [some over 300
characters long] or the fact that the map definitions are after the
'end of body' tag.

If you go to the URL you'll see the page does load ... it's the links
from the "map" that don't work ... even though Arachne picks up some
of what it needs, the end result is an error message.

Any fans left for 1.64?

My tests at the time showed it to be a tad

Somewhere along the line the JPEG-in-frame

Hi everyone!

I've tried tu use the multitasking feature of DR-DOS, too. They specify in
the doc (somewhere in the help file I believe) that it was impossible for
two applications to share the same peripheral (say a COM port).
In fact this is done by creating a virtual machine for each application,
and in that case the program sees a virtual device not a real one.
I tried to use DOSEMU under Linux. In fact DOSEMU provides such virtual
stuff. Your favorite version of DOS will boot and run not on a plain PC,
but on a
DOSEMU machine. In fact, two or three DOSes will boot simultaneously if you
want...
Well, the emulation of a PC on a PC isn't perfect, but, at least, you have
some real multitasking there.

(And none of you mentioned Windows NT. And I'm not sure, but I believe
Win9x acts pretty much the same with DOS in a window box ;-)

Does this mean that I can't run more than one Internet program with DR-DOS,
as it'd be sharing a com port (my external modem)?

If so, I guess I have to mark another one off the list.

I can't see how ANY programs could share a com port, any more than how
you could connect to two ISPs at once with one telephone line.

It should be possible for two programs to share one winsock or TCP/IP
stack while that single winsock communicates to your single comport
for BOTH programs.

But maybe it would be easier to run two modems and two telephone lines.
Certainly faster. <G>

Christof, the zip came down OK. Maybe I had a reception error, or your

That's interesting, with YOUR Arachne version the first and last images

With MY Arachne, (1.62) *ALL* are red boxes. :(

Guenter, I think there may be a problem with the HTML.

Thanks very much for such diligent work.
However, we already know what type of page causes it.

Any page which does not send the file size of the HTM, HTML,
SHTML, ASP, CGI, etc, etc, etc...

Such pages will sometimes "spontaneously trigger" the bug.
Others will be fine unless we attempt to abort the D/L before it has
completed.

Try aborting http://www.metacrawler.com/ at about 10kb
(might take several tries to trigger the bug)

When we come back to the page where the link was and take the link again...
That link will then be displayed on our screen just as normal.

I believe it is illegal for an ISP to refuse service to a subscriber
for reason that the subscriber is using an OS which competes with the one
the ISP is trying to promote. This is a violation of the anti-monopoly
laws. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that MicroSoft is paying bribes to
ISPs that go out of their way to promote their OS to the exclusion of all
others.

There are some packet driver, which supports multitasking in more than one task at the
same time!

Bernie responded:
Actually in pratice this shows to not be correct. The problem comes when
you use a Pentium Pro class CPU with those speeds. CPUs that are affected
are: Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Duron and
Thunderbird. For instance an AMD k6-2 will still run those programs fine
even if you are well above 200MHz.

Would the Athlon be included too? Does this Runtime Error affect Arachne? It
is awful strange to buy a fast computer only to slow it down to avoid this
Runtime Error! I presume Borland has long discontinued support for Turbo Pascal
5, 5.5 and 6.

I just sent Seekhey the ARCHN170.EXE as an email attachment...I know
it went, 'cause I saw it go...

My ISP wuuuuvs me...!!!...actually he lets me do just about anything
like this I want to do....someone tried to receive a 200Mbyte email
attachment, once, and jammed up all the servers, except the main
portal server, and he got a bit miffed, but other than something
like that, he just lets us jump in and try the water to our hearts
content.....<g g g >

Seedhey should get back to me later today and let me know if the
attachment got through....

If it did, then we are one step closer to SeekHey's install...BUT
we need to get instructions ready, as to how he should install it,
where, his file-directs (e.g. f:\mail\, i:\cache\, etc.

I think we all agree that Arachne runs best from an approximately
12Mbyte, or bigger, RAMDisk. Installed this way, Arachne is the
fastest Downloader on the whole web, as far as dialup ISPs go.
..and even 14.4 should be reasonably fast.

.......gregy

(end of quote)

Do most ISPs accept 200 MB email nessage? Bluegrass Net stated their maximum
was 8 MB, while most other ISPs had a maximum of 5 MB.

I thought Seek Hey said he was going to download Arachne at school and carry
home on diskette.

Seek Hey's modem speed. 14.4K, might roughly suggest how much RAM he might have,
considering what was in vogue when 14.4K modems were in vogue (1994?). Some
extended memory must be saved for DPMI programs and other extended memory use.
Maybe 12 MB would be too much? How big a RAMdisk is possible in DOS if one has
a current up-to-date computer with 256 MB RAM?

Regarding the illegality of Seek Hey's grandmother sharing a copy of Windows,
commercial software licenses typically allow use on one computer. But with
Linux or (Free, Net or Open)BSD, it is perfectly legal to use a CD or set of CDs
to install on multiple computers. I guess they're not on the lookout for people
using the same copy of DOS on more than one computer?

See PKTMux ...

it takes an existing packetdriver interface and makes many 'copies' of it
for different VMs.

I don't know where I found it ... but google.com should help.

Why use windows (winsock) ??
Linux would be MUCH more efficient !

or linux
