Subject: Landmines and UXOs
Hi everybody,
I'm trying to put together some material on landmines and UXOs
(unexploded ordnances), to be used in *information kiosks* (on, you
guessed it, some old 486s). <g>
I've been browsing the web for good photos and descriptive material of
landmines and UXOs, but have found very little that would be useful for
children.
I've checked most of the web sites of organizations that deal with this
subject, but haven't found very much that is appropriate. Most of those
sites focus on promoting their own program (makes sense, for funding
reasons), but have very little in the way of actual education.
If anybody has a few good photos I would GREATLY appreciate it if you
would send them to me. Simple educational material - in any language -
would also be good. Please include a short note explaining the content.
Audio or video would be awesome.
If anyone finds an excellent web site with *quality* photos or
documentation, please forward that also.
Many thanks,
Bob Dohse

Hi all,
Posting a simple question to the list,
I received this unsolicited URL...... offering free prescriptions.
I can't imagine it any serious country where the physician has to know =

It seems to be not serious.....sorta teleprescriptions ???
Here in Argentina the FDA equivalent (ANMAT) requires watermarked paper =

Why are serious medicine to be offered like TYLENOL ?
Health can be at risk !!! (bloof pressure, sugar level, cholesterol, =

Spammers are also daring to put health at risk along offending the law ?
Would you recommend to report it to any enforcement agency ?

Bob,
I did a Google search on, "+landmine +photo" (without the quotes, but with
the +'s) and came up with about 10,000 hits. Of the few that I looked at,
one seemed to have some good photos (URL split for e-mail):
photoreports/99photos/set99a/paan.html#Photo_P1>
I didn't try to find UXO photos, but would search in the same manner.

On this subject there is a lot of bad information and bum advice out
there. Beware. I would not trust any information on this subject other
than what I would find in an official military manual published by the
armed forces of the US or its allies.
Many landmines are improvised devices and they will not look at all
like the well known "standard" ones. You will probably want to look
at some drawings of booby traps too. The size and appearance and design
of booby traps are limited only by the nefariousness of human ingenuity.
You can download official US government military manuals on the subject
compiled and written by US Army ordnance experts if you go to this site:
General Dennis J. Reimer Training and Doctrine Digital Library,
http://www.adtdl.army.mil
You will probably want to look at some Field Manuals (FM's) and some
Technical Manuals (TM's) These publications are full of technical
drawings and photos and other illustrations. Many of the manuals can be
viewed online in HTML format. Others may be downloaded as PDF files and
also in other formats. You will not have to sign up for a login and
password to download most of the manuals from this web site and you will
not have to knowingly let them know who you are. Some of the
publications available for download at this site are restricted. To
download the restricted publications you will need to sign up for a
login and a password. They will not issue a login and password to
anyone except certain US government contractors and people who are
members of the US armed forces or homeland or state defense forces.

Apologies to those who could care less ... but if this could save the

want to and I won't care.
I'd rather you delete without reading than forget to write down a URL

I have 3 programs in use:
1- Partition Resizer
2- Smart Boot Manager
3- MBR-tool
> What those programs do is rewrite the MBR and provide an interface so
> you can make your selection of which "primary" partition you want.
With MBR-tool I can view and edit the Master Boot Record... but what
does the records mean?
The HD I made 2 partitions on:
ACT TYPE Start End LBA-start LBA-lenght
Entry 1: 80 01 01 00 06 0E A3 C1 23 00 00 00 B7 A7 05 00
Entry 2: 00 00 81 C2 05 0E E3 A7 DA A7 05 00 AE D7 01 00
Entry 3: 00 00 all zero
Entry 4: all zero
IIAC the first hex byte 80 or 00 means active or inactive partition
fifth hex byte 06 = primary FAT16
05 = extended (FAT16??)
0B = FAT32 (extended??)
0C = FAT32 primary
As I wanted to change the extended into a primary 05 was replaced by 06
but that does not function... so there must be some more to that.
The new partition can be activated with the boot manager but although
the 'system' and command.com is installed no booting is possible.
The computer hangs with just a "-" cursor blinking and no reaction
to any key.

I had been warned about this and made the rescue diskette ;-)

That cable TV descrambler ad claims it's legal, but naturally I have grave
doubts. I don't know about the legality of publicizing technical plans for
destructive devices and other illegal weapons, but there would be the likelihood
of a visit by the FBI.

Regarding that chain-letter pyramid scheme with the five reports for $25, the
message says it's legal, that they're selling something of value, namely the
five reports. But it's still, to all intents and purposes, a chain-letter
pyramid scheme.

I do find those penis-enlargement spams funny in that people are expected to
really believe the message. Funnier yet is that spam promoting a product
supposed to increase not only your penis length and thickness but also the
number of squirts you get when having sex. People are expected to take that
seriously?

I understand that there are still pockets of the Catholic Church

Well, I had compulsory Latin in primary school as well as secondary
school, fifty to forty-two years ago.
Even as a scientist, I am not sure that it was truly warranted for me,
although it was then essential to have Latin if one was to read
Classics, Law or Medicine at a British University. But I guess times
have changed.

You can use a tool which shows these records , e.g.,
http://www.bttr-software.de/bootmgr/ (or one of the more sophisticated
tools available on the Web, look for, e.g. Ranish).

Right.

Not FAT16! Extended partition is a 'container' that keeps logical
partitions (also known as logical drives) INSIDE.
> As I wanted to change the extended into a primary 05 was replaced by 06
> but that does not function... so there must be some more to that.
C D -q
This cannot work (see above).
If you want to make a second primary DOS partition with DOS FDISK and
some hex editor only, you first have to hide your current primary
partition (by, e.g., changing it's identifier from 06 hex to 16 hex).
Then you can add another primary partition with FDISK (it won't recognize
type 16 hex as a DOS primary partition, and won't complain that there
would be already one); of course, DOS won't even boot from type 16 hex,
it will be inaccessible. Finally, unhide your original primary partition
(change it type from 16 hex back to 06 hex). After next reboot, you'll
see two primary DOS partitions; remember to give them some labels,
because drive letter ordering in case of multiple primary partitions
depends on DOS version, and can easily get confused.
Hope it helps,
Michal
