Hi Arachne users,
it seems, that Arachne 1.60 is comming *really* soon.
I have just fixed various problems, including:
- - nested tables problems
- - total number of tables is no longer limited
- - multicolumn cells problems
- - bugs when nested tables were aligned to the left
- - bugs with proper table cell alignment....
and more !!! I just hope that my hard disk won't crash until I manage to
release the full new version ! ;-)
I consider my HTML code to be freezed now, but I still want to play
with cut/copy/paste in Arachne Editor (<TEXTAREA> tag).

Thanks, Howard.
One problem I have with using Netdial to establish a connection
and install a packet driver ahead of booting up Arachne is this:
If I hangup with ALT-H, then I have to start all over again.<g>.
With the regular Arachne setup, (no netdial), I can just ALT-D
and get back on, leaving Arachne up and running while I was
disconnected.
I doubt there is an easy solution, and to be honest, I am happy
with the Netdial-Arachne combo like it is. (See my post of January
3, 2000 where I detailed how I got that combo running)

Thats actually one of the best things I've heard this year. :)
(which have only began a few days ago. but you get the point..)
So far it sounds like 1.60 will be ALOT better then 1.50src,
which means, very good thing. :)

Great news Michael - better back it up BEFORE your hard disk crashes ! <G>
I see you sent that with 1.6 alfa. Are we going to get alfa or beta ?

That's very useful info and I didn't know about it.

I found them in my Dalco catalog (www.dalco.com). My catalog is a
little dated, but they are part number 62431. There are 20 per pack,
10 for case cover and 10 for the internal boards. They are plastic
and they cost $5 USD. Hope they still have them if you are still

Subject: load EPPPD high
Hello all,
I have another computer that I cannot get epppd to load high.
Need to know what I am doing wrong. Here is the line in my
arachne.cfg file:

Hangup @termin.com 0x60>NUL

In this example, epppd is not loaded high. I can
only get a connection using:

But, you can't load _high_ because you don't have any _high memory_
What's casing that "Reserved" section of memory?
Reserved for _what_???
Obviously not for you to use as _you_ see fit.

COMPAQ DOS 3.31 is often found on old COMPAQ 286's and 8088's. Vendors
at flea markets trying to sell these old COMPAQ PC's frequently have also
the original installation disks and the manual. I have found that COMPAQ
DOS 3.31 works just as well on an IBM clone.
A discovery I have made with DOS 3.31 is that a 286 machine running that
DOS version can load the drivers that will enable an external IOMEGA
ZIP drive. With just DOS 3.30, I can't load the drivers for the ZIP drive.

"Restart in MS-DOS mode" is not an pure MSDos mode as with
"Command prompt only" AFAIK. Its just windows without GUI loaded.
But Kernel still in memory. But i too do not understand tings with DOS Box.

Just like with cars, when manufacturer recommend Michelin ***/*** tires,
everyone will use only this ***/*** tires. Nobody want to take risk and purchase
Pirelli tires.
So if someone , who is do not know how to open cover of computer
(it was me with Apple G3 ;) hear that this modem designed for Windows 98
it thinks "Cool, It designed for Windows 98, so it must work very, very good".

You might want to check out: http://www.gate.net/~ddata/xlHtml/index.htm
It's an Excel to HTML converter. There's a DOS version that requires
a 386 or higher PC.
Take Care...

Hi guys,
AFAIK the "only" way to get a "pure" DOS prompt on a WINcrap machine is
the "DOS boot disk". Actually works fine & ignores all the WINcrap ...
just go & do ure DOS stuf.
I don't have any "WINmodems" (thank God & his helpers) but have/do use
ARACHNE from a "DOS box" on occasion.
I'm not doing any more ARACHNE stuf 'til 1.60 ... hee hee.

Win 98SE boot diskette and to MS-DOS 6.22 and 5 as well, but OK with DR-DOS and
OS/2 Warp 4.
One computer instructor told me, during the era of Windows 3.0, that Windows was
for somebody who doesn't know how to use a computer, and apparently Windows is
still being used this way. New computer users don't understand what a Winmodem
is, and frequently the specifications just call it a "modem", which is rather
like calling textured vegetable protein meat. New computer users who don't know
better are attracted by the description of a Winmodem as "designed specifically
to take advantage of the Windows operating system", which certainly doesn't
sound like a crippled modem. Winmodem is part of Bill Slobodan Gates' ethnic
cleansing campaign to force computer users to stay with Windows.

Subject: Editing links
Does Arachne have any way to edit a link in a Web page? Lynx can directly edit
a link with Shift-E. With Arachne, one can edit the whole Web page starting
with F4. Any browser would permit downloading the Web page and then editing in
a separate text editor. It might be necessary to specify <base href=(whatever),
so that relative URLs don't cause the browser to look on the user's hard drive
for what would be on the Web site. One thing I would like is to be able to take
the URL from right to left and stop at the first (rightmost) http:// in cases
like
http://radio.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.sesac.com/web.htm
I don't like the idea of either having to view a Web page in a subframe, as this
type of URL results in, or being snooped on. About.com says the purpose is to
make navigation easier, but it is simple enough to go back from an ordinary
nonframed link, like in the above example http://www.sesac.com/web.htm.
I believe About.com does this to snoop on users, getting data for marketing
purposes. Sometimes a bug in a link makes it nonworkable, like missing dot
before htm, or %%255E sequence, which is converted to %5E but no further. Or a
link like http://newscenter.about.com?PM=51_1_T/ which is an invalid hostname,
at least with Lynx. With Lynx, I can edit out the junk, %%255E becomes _, and I
can strip out ?... where it is just useless freight. DOS Lynx 386, newest
version, works better than Arachne or Netscape.

My computer is an Acer 386sx., ca. 1990. It has no CPU fan, but it does
have a fan to blow hot air out of the case and to suck cooler air back
inside the case. If running, it will crash if the ambient temperature falls
to around 35 F. If turned off, it cannot be made to boot again unless the
ambient temperature is approx. in the range of > 65 F. and < 85 F. If left
running, it will continue to operate even if ambient temperatures should
rise to the 90's. Also, if turned off for a long period, it won't boot for
at least 15 minutes after being turned on. The hard drive always spins up
immediately. I think it is about time to replace the motherboard. My
computer didn't used to suffer from any temperature-related quirks a couple
of years ago.

Sam Heywood,
It looks like your motherboard has old-age stiffness that can get worse but will
never get better. Motherboard, if it were in good working condition, would have
practically no market value today. Motherboard could fail all the way without
warning, or maybe the current symptoms of old-age stiffness constitute warning,
so you might want to be sure you can transfer user data from the hard drive to
a new computer, or back up the user data. Maybe find a 486 or early Pentium
motherboard or computer real cheap?

That's weird, Smartdrv loads high automagically for me. I think there's a
switch to prevent it, you should make sure that it's not there. (see "help
smartdrv" and/or "smartdrv/?")
And there should be plenty of room, but this is similar to the fact that if
I load mscdex (or nwcdex or shsucdx) I can't get the keyboard driver in
upper memmory even if there's room for it - and I can add other things up
there.
