The answer to your "??" is simple.
When I removed c:\1common from my path,
Niether c:\1common\dos4gw.exe nor c:\1common\cwsdpmi.exe could be found
by pdftotex.exe when it asked for it.
But, on that first test I was not yet thinking about cwsdpmi.exe
I was testing for wheather or not dos4gw.exe was required.
So, since I ran that first test of pdftotex.exe/dos4wg.exe from within
Arachne....... L:\arachne\cwsdpmi.exe _was_ found.
Yep, I forgot that I also had a copy of it in the Arachne directory.

Correct. The programmer might have also forgotten about the fact that
cwsdpmi.exe was in the path or the current directory.(like I did)<g>
Hey, I've gotten so used to pressing X<enter> to run Xtree-pro....
I find myself doing it while in Arachne.
(and of coarse I end-up at http://arachne.cz/ )
Now, if we could just find a PDF to text converter that doesn't
require 386+
Or does someone know of a DPMI that will work on less than a 386 ???
