AHA !
Hi Bernie, Mike, Richard;
So that's why it works for so many !

Yes, I also found it on the HD on my P90 where I put Arachne 1.6b1 for testing.
That's a strange file to include in a distribution that's supposed to be able
to run on a '286 - or has that changed ? BTW, it's NOT in 1.50b2 distribution.

I normally run Arachne (and everything else for that matter) on my '486 where
Arachne has to run on a ramdisk to keep my blood pressure down.
Since Arachne was not expanded when I tested pdftotex, cwsdpmi was not there.

Are we being pried/pushed/pulled kicking and screaming into the 32 bit world ?

Richard, I personally prefer a flat address space and have always found the
segmented Intel architecture repulsive. That hardly excuses adding more
software to my hardware just so it can run an incredibly bloated version of a
simple format conversion routine. Any self respecting ASM programmer with the
proper motivation could cut that 1meg down to 64k and wouldn't need a dpmi.

I think the best programmers in the world are gamers. And if THESE guys,
writing in ASM, want to use a flat address space to get the effect they are
building, then that's fine by me. It might be a good idea to put a Honda
engine in a Reynard chassis to enter an F1 race, but putting a supercharger
on a Honda Civic to pull a trailer uphill is just silly.

I hope the fractured analogy is amusing to some.

Just so you won't think I'm a total Luddite, I will try QDPMI to see if it
has ANY negative effect on my everyday 16bit operations. I will also try,
and possibly use, pdftotex until something more respectable comes along.

As always, the opinions expressed are those of the writer and do not reflect
the views of the majority.<G>
