- -When you shell out of arachne (alt-e) and type FTP at the dos prompt, you
- -get a similar screen as in telnet.exe. Probably your ISP has some info
- -about servers on a webpage, from which you should use the ftp-server.
- -(ftp.xs4all.nl is just an example, it's the server I use myself, but it
- -requires a login with password, similar to telnet)(there is also a link to
- -ftp.ook and telnet.ook, on the arachne utilities page, choose "your
- -applications". You can, of course, add links to .ook to your dialpage.
I tried using FTP.EXE too. It's a lot friendlier than TELNET. At least I can
get the help command to work. I tried tpo delete the files that are giving
me trouble. It verified each delete, all 124 of them. But it didn't do9 it.
Their still there. When you use TELNET the dele doesn't actually work until
you successfully quit. I haven't been able to do that either. I don't know
what you have to do to get the deleted files to actually be deleted.
I succesfully closed the server.
- -When you use telnet.exe from the dos prompt, you type alt-a to end server
- -mode and then the name of a server you want to log in to (mine is
- -xs4.xs4all.nl). Then you'll be prompted for name and password, and get to
- -your website.
- -Telnet.exe does not have support for file transfer commands, nor for
- -renaming or deleting. FTP.exe does.
TELNET has file transfer commands but I couldn't get them to work. There
is RETR to download a file. And there is DELE to delete the files. The
files aren't actually deleted until you successfully quit.

- -"dele" in telnet.exe is new to me. Does it work?
The DELE command seems to work fine. But the files aren't actually deleted
until you successfully quit. The QUIT command hsn't been working for me.
- -I usually logout with exit, not quit, but that's to end a unix shell, not
-telnet.exe
Does EXIT work? I tried [Alt-X] it exited but it didn't update the deleted
files. They're still there.

Subject: Arachne Load Error (Arachne with CompuServe)
Hi Roger,
<<Roger Turk
If you log onto Compuserve, you
*can't* get on the web, but you can FTP, Telnet, etc., except *browse* the
www. The exception is, I think, using Compuserve's proprietary software,
you can browse the web.>>
Ummm, huh? If you have CompuServe "Classic" account (i.e. you have
a numeric ID) then you can certainly use BobCat, NetTamer,
Arachne etc with a CompuServe dial up. If you have a
CompuServe 2000 account (i.e. AOL screen names) then no, you
can't because you're using AOL's front end and it doesn't provide
a PPP connection.
I rarely use the Arachne dialer to do this. It's usually okay
if you don't need have your modem called by an 'address'.
I thought Steve said he was able to use CompuServe with Arachne,
but not with his FreeWeb account?
One thing he mentioned was the use of smtp.compuserve.com as
the outgoing mail server when not using CompuServe. In the past
you could do that, but it's now a closed relay and it won't
accept mail for sending that doesn't originate from a dialup
on a CompuServe account.
The basic setup for Arachne on Compuserve is to proceed as
normal with the setup (getting the modem to work is often
the hardest part <g>).
In Arachne.cfg the entries for CompuServe, if you're going
to use the Arachne MiniTerm.exe dialer, that you can edit
in are relatively minor, listed here by section of Arachne.cfg
Items not listed can be what setup is successful in creating:
Be sure you're in the Arachne directory when logging in.

Thanks Dale,
I am using the DNS addresses provided by the Freewwweb ISP instructions for
Windows DUN setup. I am beginning to suspect that after connection and
login verification, Freewwweb is routing requests to a proxy server, as
Sergei suggested. Does that sound likely to you? As for Compuserve, I
wonder if something similar isn't happening there also. I originally got
Compuserve dial-up clues from the CIS Internet Resources Forum. One reason
I was hoping to get Arachne surfing on Freewwweb is so I can dump Compuserve
and continue to use an old DOS machine.

addresses for each ISP you are accessing are entered correctly? My
first efforts with Arachne were unsuccessful because I did not know
what these numbers were and I did not enter any. I was able to
connect, but after that nothing happened. If you have these
addresses entered make sure that you enter the correct numbers for
each service and then save each one as a different Arachne profile
(.acf) file. I first connected Arachne successfully with Compuserve,
but I left them about a year ago for a local ISP. Have you visited
the Internet Resources Forum on CIS? You might want to visit there if
you have not as there are some knowledgeable folks there about
Arachne. I hope this helps and please keep trying as Arachne is
definitely worth the effort.<<

Sergei,
Compuserve will start at any page. I often use the Arachne home page. It
usually loads okay, at least most of it. But then I can't go to any other
site. I try setting other sites to start, and sometimes the Freewwweb home
page, which is home.freewwweb.com, however that immediately relays to
freewwweb.snap.com. Freewwweb will work from a Windows browser at any start
page, but terms of the subscription require that we start at
home.freewwweb.com
Thanks for being 'that kind of friend'.

Of course! The plain vanilla SB Pro/16 you buy off the shelf only has a
FM chip (Yamaha OPL-2 or OPL-3) for making music, and MegaMID does not
support that. To get any sound out of your SB Pro/16, you'll need to
either :
* Connect some sort of external MIDI equipment via your SB's joystick port,
like a music keyboard or synthesizer (with MIDI)
* If you have a SB 16 with a WaveBlaster connector, you can get a wavetable
daughterboard card
* Buy a new sound card
- -- WILL THERE BE SUPPORT FOR THE FM CHIP ? --
Probably not.
I've tried... it's too much trouble and it sounds pretty bad.
With wavetable cards getting more popular and old FM-based cards
getting obsolete, it's probably not worth the trouble to do it.
People with FM cards who are serious about their music should upgrade
to a wavetable card.
end of quote

> A freeware MIDI player. Can also play Karaoke MIDI files.
Sorry to disapoint you but this program doesn't work with a SB16.
Of course it can *view* kareoke files - but that isn't very helpful since
the point with .kar files are that you can sing along with the music. ;)
>Obviously FM synthesis leaves much to be desired so I upgraded the card
>with an Ensoniq Daughterboard (similiar to a WaveBlaster addon board

You can't claim that any SB16 works if you have bought extra equipment for
yours.
I've tried most of the programs that exist that claim to work and only two
really work. The first one is called play.exe and came with my SB16, the
other is Cubic Player (which I didn't even know could play MIDIs up until a
few days ago).
I really can't see why all the people that have made midi and/or kareoke
players assume that a daughterboard or extra chip is a standard
configuration. No matter how crappy it sounds SB16 is still the de facto
standard amoung soundcards.
Thankfully we have moved on from beeper -> Adlib -> SB -> SB16. And my bet
is that Creative environmental audio (used in SB Live cards) or Aureal 3D
(open standard - so more cards exist that use it, but no DirectX support is
planned from M$) will be the new standard in a "few" (5 or so) years.
When I tried Cubic Player I must say that some MIDIs sounded much better
(ex. USSR national song, pink panther theme) but some sounded terrible (ex.
Star Wars theme). All comparsions with play.exe of course.
BTW: Another usefull thing I noticed that Cubic Player haev is the fact
that it can see files that are packed and unpack them for playing.

mc is a textbased program - not a graphical one. And AFAIK Norton came
first and Midnight later.
And the internal editor in mc is not "vi" it's "mcedit" which isn't so very
strange from a standard (DOS) text editor. My favorite is still SetEdit
since the shortcuts are the normal ones, but mcedit isn't to bad. IIRC the
backspace key even removes the characther to the left and the delete key
the curent characther - and this is *very* uncommon in the UN*X world.

What start page? It seems you would need tracerte, traceroute or the

TRACERT.EXE for DOS somewhere, and I have used TRACERTE in OS/2 Warp 4. But no
Unix would be without these utilities.

They use an extension to SMTP.
As I already wrote SMTP has a _BIG_ drawback, it does not support
authentication, so there is a problem with spammers, and not well
configured servers.
So there are 3 options:
1) allow only certain IP adresses to access the server (not applicable for
free providers, becausr IP adress is not known)
2) pop before smtp (pop requires authentication, after you connect to the
pop server, the IP is recoreded, and you are allowed to use the SMTP
for a certain amount of time)
3) authenticated SMTP (some extension of SMTP, so that you need a
username/passwd)
only methods 1 and 2 can be used with arachne.
(method 2 eg for gmx.net you need first to get your mail, before you are
allowed to send it)

Hi Arachnoids,
when will Arachne-Core be opensourced??

According to Michael, nope. Arachne is a commercial software, which is
free for non-commercial use.
Some parts of it might be open-sourced, but definetly not the Core.

Roger,
You report very queer things. WWW is based on HTTP protocol that is
member of TCP/IP family as FTP, Telnet, etc. It generates the same IP
packets that should be handled properly by Compuserve. Some local
providers probably may disable HTTP but this is political question not
technical.

Steve,
There is the single IP address of the host that deals with electric
signals of provider's receiving modem you have dial-up access to. Namely
this hostname providers used to give as starting page for their clients.
And only with this host you can handle exactly without DNS (Domain Name
System) service. Any other start pages may be situated anywhere in the
world and may be accessible without DNS servicing (via IP address) or may
be not. That is why I bothered you by "hostname" questions.
Well, I've learned some interesting information for you about your
providers and their networking service. Your native Freewwweb e-mail is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] you may use it in .cfg and your e-mail will
work more reliable. You can send e-mail to yourself from freewwweb.com to
pps-2.smartworld.net and see the results. Some nslookup info is given
below:
============================================
(for Compuserve)
Authoritative answers can be found from:
compuserve.com nameserver = ARL-NAME-SVC-1.compuserve.com
compuserve.com nameserver = DUB-NAME-SVC-1.compuserve.com
ARL-NAME-SVC-1.compuserve.com internet address = 149.174.211.5
DUB-NAME-SVC-1.compuserve.com internet address = 149.174.213.5
(for Freewwweb)
freewwweb.com preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx.smartworld.net
freewwweb.com nameserver = cbru.br.ns.els-gms.att.net
freewwweb.com nameserver = dbru.br.ns.els-gms.att.net
freewwweb.com nameserver = nic.near.net
freewwweb.com nameserver = ns.smartworld.net
mx.smartworld.net internet address = 216.70.64.22
mx.smartworld.net internet address = 216.70.64.23
cbru.br.ns.els-gms.att.net internet address = 199.191.128.105
dbru.br.ns.els-gms.att.net internet address = 199.191.128.106
nic.near.net internet address = 192.52.71.4
ns.smartworld.net internet address = 216.70.64.1
==========================================================
As you can see you set correct Primary and Secondary nameservers for
Compuserve 149.174.211.5 and 149.174.213.5, but for Freewwweb you
set the single 216.70.64.1. There are 3 additional nameservers for
Freewwweb and you can try to set them in .cfg
About start pages in a light of my previous letter you can try the
following IP addresses:

Name: home.snap.com
Addresses: 206.132.166.64, 206.132.166.65, 206.132.166.66, 206.132.166.67
206.132.166.61, 206.132.166.62, 206.132.166.63
Aliases: freewwweb.snap.com
Name: home.freewwweb.com
Addresses: 216.70.93.138, 216.70.93.170
=================================================
Good luck,
Sergei.
