 Confirmed... same problem here.
I turned-off frames to see what's happening.
They are using "nested frames".(each frame contains several more frames)

And of coarse with frames off... this message is displayed:

Pfffft! I'll get you for this! I told you that browser was old and

Subject: Slightly off topic from TELNET thread

I use DOS TAPCIS on Compuserve to download my mail. It saves all mail
messages, one after the other, in a long text file. Multiple messages
in "majordomo" lists that I subscribe to are strung along in that file
just as if each was an individual message. My style is to use a text
editor to kill, copy (append) out to other files, etc. the mail
messages. That is how I operate most efficiently. If I get a binary
attachment in text form, I simply UUdecode it.

I just activated a POPmail port to Compuserve so when I travel, I can
access messages on any PC with a browser. I had intended to save
messages to a text file (browser save to file command). But, I see that
all messages must be accessed individually and multiple messages in a
list have to be individually accessed as well by clicking an icon for
each. It is a pain mousing through dozens of messages, one at a time to
save each to a text file, and then joining all those files together.

Question: Is there a POP/IMAP web site, or a small WIN32 POP/IMAP or
TELNET or otherwise mail program that I can use to assess my Compuserve
mailbox, and that will save all messages to a single text file like
TAPCIS does? I will be calling from a WIN32 PC that has internet access
but not direct dial-up access to Compuserve.

Thanks, Barry.

Go to Simtel (that is to http://www.simtel.net) and look for a file called
something like tcapnn.zip where the nn are some version number or other
like tcap12.zip etc. This is a TSR that records all keyboard input and/or
all characters that appear on the screen and puts the results in a file.

Pine for Dos is known to be quite a (conventional) memory hog. My guess
is that nwcache is taking up a bit of conventional memory that pine needs.
And nwcache does take up more memory than smartdrv. Try loading nwcache
high, if you can do it and/or removing some other devices or TSRs from
memory. You could do a special lean boot, just to run pine.

Subject: (OT) AOL/windows users (was Re: screwed attachments)

Sam,
The answer to your question is simple...
AOL users are Windows users. And Windows users are too lazy to change
the defualt setting of "Send forwarded message as eMail attatchment".
Hence.... the multiple attachments. (every winbloze user along the way
just clicked "forward" and there-by created a new attachment to the
message which alredy contained 37 attachments)

You see, the other default setting in that "crap software" is...
"Display eMail attachments In-line"
So, an AOL user doesn't have 37 attachments to "open".
Their AOL software automatically opens _all_ of them and displays them.
(so all they need to do is scroll 37 miles down the page to get to the
original message)<vbg>

Thanks for the suggestion, Glenn.

The above would be very nice if it would work, but it won't. See the
screen-shot:

Do you suppose I might get different results if I placed the line
for loading NWCACHE in a different order in my AUTOEXEC.BAT? Should
I conduct some experiments along such lines? I don't really understand
at all the meaning of "interrupts re-hooked"

When delay is set to "ON", I will invariably get non-identical copies
of the FAT whenever she crashes. I know. I've tried it. Also I've
tried increasing the size of the disk cache. Strangely enough, I cannot
speed up my Arachne by doing so.

 Didn't find tcapnn.zip but I did find
http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/keyboard/encore.zip

- ---clipped from encore.doc---
Purpose: Records and plays back the keystroke sequences and intervening
pauses needed to execute repetitive sets of menu choices or commands.
Keystroke sequences can be saved and loaded as files or in memory, and
playback requires only a single keystroke.

You need to load nwcache last.

Subject: history list growing by leaps and bounds

My history list is getting very large--some 260 entries totalling over
12000 bytes. I don't want to del it entirely. Is there some way to
limit its size within Arachne, or must I use a text editor?

Part of the reason it is too large is that it unnecessarily tracks local
files. Every time I return to the local home page, an entry is created
for file:c:\arachne\home.htm . Every time I open the hot list, a new
entry is added for file:hotlist.htm .

The history list should not store these things. Only remote sites
should be included.

Also, there is unnecessary duplication if I pick a previously visited
site off the list. Instead of simply repositioning the pointer to the
previously visited site, Arachne creates a new entry. So the same
remote sites will be in there several times.

Hello Mark -

I will be glad to do that for you, but I cannot do it right away
because the computers on which I have working installations are
not located here. They are on some sites about 50 miles from here.
Maybe in about a week. You can expect to receive the whole thing,
being a zipped file of about 300K.

I will delete from it only my own personal fax documents and phone

notice of a date and time when I should send such a large file to

Hello Barry:

There are free IMAP sites at http://www.telebot.com and at
http://www.subdimension.com. AFAIK, you cannot use these sites to
access a POP3 account someplace else. You can sign up for a web-based
mail account at http://www.valise.com. The basic service is free, but
if you want to use the site to access a POP3 account someplace else,
then you will have to upgrade your class of service by paying them
$20.00 per year. Valise works with Arachne and with Bobcat/Lynx.
To use Bobcat/Lynx with Valise, you have to resort to a few crazy
tricks and work-arounds that I've discovered. I wrote a note to the
webmaster to tell him how I did it, and he was delighted to hear that
his site was the only web-based email place that I know of that will
work with Bobcat/Lynx. Even though there is a lot of Java-Script at
Valise, it seems that the webmaster is taking special care not to lock
out the Arachnids and the Bobcats.

The DOS program Net-Tamer will download all mail into one long
concatenated file. (Net-Tamer does not work with Valise) Net-Tamer
has a very user-friendly feature that provides for individual message
segments to be snipped out and saved or deleted. With Net-Tamer you
may work with attachments. The program has its own built-in
UUDECODE/UUENCODE and base 64 programs.

You can download a fully functional shareware version from
http://www.nettamer.net. Registration offers a few additional perks
and it removes the nag screens. I really like Net-Tamer, and I
registered it.

Net-Tamer is no hog for memory. It will even run just fine in a 640K
XT. You may configure it for using it with your favorite text editor.
In addition to being a very fine email program, Net-Tamer is also a
very fast www text browser, and it also has a built in FTP and TELNET
program. Also Net-Tamer does news-groups.

With a Windows 95 machine equipped with a WinModem, you can run Net-Tamer
if you click on SHUT DOWN > Restart IN MS-DOS mode. I couldn't get her
to run from a "DOS-box".

All the best,

OK, good explanation, Glenn, but why don't they have sense enough to snip
and cut out all of the other junk. Whenever I forward a message to
someone I take care to send only the pertinent information, such as the
reputed original source [and yes, I know it's a redundant phrase] and the
content. I will always include a note saying something to the effect that
it was said to have been told by so and so, or that it was said to have
been published in such and such a journal, etc. Nobody except the village
gossips care about tracking the audit trail of pass_it_on_hearsay. As I
do not like being considered one of those, I really resent being sent
attachments of the type described. Because the AOLers do things that way,
they have a very well-deserved reputation for spreading all kinds of
hoaxes. They are like a bunch of chicken-littles.

Hey, I just got an error message:

I agree. Seems like a good ideas (limiting size, not duplicate URLs..)
BTW, for the meanwhile, either use a text-editor, or do what I do:
just delete the file. :)
Arachne will generate a new one the next time you run it. (or you can
just compress it and store it somewhere.)

Some TSR loaded AFTER nwcache did chain into some interrupt.

Simply load NWCACHE _AFTER_ that program.
If you place NWCACHE at the end of autoexec.bat it should work under all
circumstances :)

you were writing about problems when connecting to your smtp-server at

(I sometimes have the same problem ..)

the error has definitely to do with the smtp-servers at gmx.

dont't be angry, just try it later!

If that's the case then IMHO Arachne should have returned a "can't
