I think they are experiencing the sort of problems that AOL
experienced 2 or 3 years ago, i.e. a huge increase in users not
accompanied by enough hardware resources. If you read that message
from FreeWWWeb's honcho you received recently (and that I posted
here) it seems to indicate that they are trying to cope. I have
trouble connecting occasionally myself and recently was unable to
download my mail while connected. It simply seemed to hang after
sending the POP password. It workd fine later though. Growing pains,
I guess.
