One would want to use www e-mail access for any number of rather
obvious reasons --

to have e-mail at all if broadband provider doesn't have mail server
to have a backup if ISP mail server goes down
to enable more than one account on more than one server
to have an additional layer of protection/anonymnity
to have access to e-mail send/receive when not on primary computer
  " " " " " " " when your computer crashes
  " " " " " " " when anywhere in world

... and last, but not least, by CC'ing yourself at alternate mail
server you can archive mail sent on computer other than your own. Don't
get carried away with keeping every little thing though, because all
providers that have any brains will limit total amount of mail storage.
[This use also provides you with the ability to refer to mail you've
sent when you can't access your own computer -- and is an independent
verification of approximately when the mail was sent ... since the web
based account will show time stamp of when it was received at that
account.
