Hi, Michael. It has been a while because I had a problem with my computer
and ended up completely rebuilding it...I am replying directly now, and
also cc'ing to the List, since the kind folks there might have some
comments.
Here is what I have found. The modem in question is an Actiontec "Call
Waiting Modem". Comes in a box on which it says "Works in ... blah, blah,
DOS and Linux"! However, the only DOS program supplied is a utility that
tells me that the modem is installed on IRQ 10, IOPORT: D800. I have "PNP
Operating System" set to "No" in the BIOS.
OK, I use Arachne PPP Setup to insert these IRQ and IOPORT numbers. But,
the only way I can get it to work is if I also choose COM1. It does not
work on COM2. This means I have to open the box and physically move my
mouse to COM2, and disable COM1 rather than COM2 in the BIOS, which is a
real pain in the ass...
Now, I didn't see why I shouldn't be able to use COM2 with this modem, so
I went hunting. It seems to me that the problem is with Arachne MINITERM.
Miniterm itself works with either COM1 or COM2 assigned to those IRQ and
IOPORT numbers; it is DOSPPPD that only works with COM1. Here is the
PPPDRC.CFG that Miniterm writes out, which works:
COM1
115200
irq 10
base 0xD800
modem
crtscts
asyncmap 0
namsrv 128.197.27.7
user "user"
passwd "xxxxxx"
But when I read Toni Lopez' documentation for dospppd, it seems to me that
this file should contain _either_ COMx, for a standard COM port, with x
the port number, _or_, for non-standard ports, the IRQ and ioport base
number, NOT BOTH. Also, what has happened to the second nameserver
address?
I don't find a way to circumvent the way that Miniterm writes out (what
seems to me to be) an incorrect pppdrc.cfg. For the moment, this is how I
get Arachne to work.
I wonder if changing the way Arachne Miniterm writes out pppdrc.cfg might
solve the many problems that other people have getting connections...
Regards
