Hi Michael, All;
Let me say first off that I have onhand an upgrade .zip that contains ONLY
the new stuff in Arachne 1.64 so it can be used to overlay your existing
install without disturbing your current settings. About 283k zipped.
There is NO arachne.cfg or .pck in it. I THINK it's all there otherwise.
Email requests to me direct. I have no way to upload to Arachne yet.
Michael, I really think this is the way to go for upgrades. Most of us
hate re-installs. I understand that you need to get feedback on the whole
process and I'm going to try to give it - and I'm sure Glenn will too, but
the upgrade route is friendlier.
Talking about friendly, the install STILL won't let you exit if you have
an unrecognized video system. It just loops back to setup XMS.
How much would it cost to add a "QUIT" option to the initial video setup ?
I'm not the only one that might have to hit the reset button here.
What about laptops and palm thingys that might have video that your setup
doesn't recognize ? It's just one little bit more polished. ;-)
Also on install, when I DID switch to VGA, it went well until after testing
my CPU. Then it quit (not crashed or locked) on the standard Arachne 640x480
display with a completely blank gray HTML (image) area.
The URL bar said setup_os.dgi.
I altXd and found a lost cluster on my ramdisk.
Restarted and all was well.
I really like the new method of loading the screen with two passes instead of
three. It seems much more finished and I think it is slightly faster but not
much. Wait 'til I get home and try it on my '386 where little differences
could mean SECONDS.
There is MUCH more DOS memory available with this version. Typically 7 kb
more, but it varies from time to time from +4 to +7 depending, I think, on
how much information about the previous URL happens to persist. I tried
hard to make a memory leak but there was none. This is all good !
Also good is the new miniterm which apparantly will not write the COM# to
PPPDRC.cfg. Let's hope the "Unable to initialize PPP" problems are gone
due to this change.
Take a look at INTERNET.htm in \docs. This looks like the start of some
very helpful documentation. We just need one file that contains the URLs
of ALL the different bits and pieces of the docs.
The only BAD thing I found was an easily repeatable error message:
Illegal xSwap offset.
This message appears when you go to a new or previous page every time the
cache is cleared (but ONLY if there was something in it).
It does NOT appear to be fatal, and may not even be a true error - just a
false message. Nothing unusual shows up on the xSwap stat screen. (?)
Michael, what is PPPVOLNY.acf ?
