If you've managed to view the Falwell page you'll have seen the
small clickable images toward the foot of the page for mailing
the page to a friend or emailing the author.
The long URLs for destination pages for the links from those
images cause the problem for Arachne online - but not when
running her offline. The problem area is found in a table near
the end of the page source. The whole table has been commented
out, so won't cause problems, at:
http://www.wymondhamleics.freeserve.co.uk/test/original.htm
The source has been made somewhat easier to read than the true
original. Search (F7) for Arachne to get to the right spot.
The next version, at:
http://www.wymondhamleics.freeserve.co.uk/test/shorturl.htm
uses shortened (obviously inactive) URLs, but retains the long URLs
for the link images, which are relative to the original location, so
won't load here, apart from the ad banner.
To try long URLs with local image sources, see:
http://www.wymondhamleics.freeserve.co.uk/test/longurl.htm
DANGER: this page will kill Arachne!
Finally, see the page in all its glory at:
http://www.wymondhamleics.freeserve.co.uk/test/ok.htm
This version uses shortened (non-working) URLs in the problem area,
with local images throughout the rest of the page.
An example of a trouble-spot is:
<a
href="../readerservice/send_item2friend.php3?item=http://www.worldnetdaily.com/bluesky_falwell/20000610_xcjfa_introducin.shtml"
onClick="return popup(this, 'notes')">
This is a relative URL, only useful at the original site, but has
the same effect when the full URL is used.
Arachne keels over just from downloading that sort of anchor (before
it's been clicked) which is rather weird.
Incidentally, a nice refinement would be to have "G" send the insertion
point to the end of the URL (which it does, counterintuitively, within
Insight). Yes, I know hitting the End or Home key will send it to the
right spot.
