Alternative mailer? Are you speaking of Arachne MailMan 2.2 that came with
version 1.41b and some earlier versions?

I never had any serious problems with either Arachne MailMan or with Insight.
With Insight my POP3 mail download would sometimes abort, but this is a
problem that would appear only very seldomly and it never caused me to lose
any messages. The messages that failed to download just stayed on the
server. I would simply click on "Get New Mail" again and everything would
work fine on the second attempt. I don't know if this is an Arachne problem
or whether there is a problem with my ISP. Of the two Arachne mailers, I
have a personal preference for Insight because it has more features.

Some of the list subscribers complain about the way the "compose new message"
feature performs within Insight. To me and to many others this is no serious
problem because various easy-to-implement work-arounds have been found.
