Some mail providers will let you use their smtp hosts if you actually have
a mailbox with their service.
For example, if I send a msg from "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", the smtp host at
mailandnews.com refuses to accept it. If I send the same msg but my From
line contains "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", then m-and-n recognizes that as a
legit user and accepts the msg.
Then there are other email services that, if you first receive your mail
via pop3 (thereby supplying a password), will then let you send email with
smtp. If you don't receive first then you won't be able to send.
