Sadly enough this isn't true here in Sweden, and I don't think there's a
law in the US that forbid sending mails to someone that doesn't want it.
It's not a matter of legalizing (such as legalizing narcotics) but
outlawing it.
I responded to a company in Denmark a few months ago and stated that I
would charge them 100USD (or was it 50?) for every hour that I started to
look into the problem they seemed to have with not allowing people to
"unsubscribe" from their spam. I haven't received another mail from them
since ;-) Not that I could have actually sent them one but it was
interesting to find out that it worked - the company seems like it isn't a
spam-company so they were probably afraid of bad PR if this would come out.

I thought that was what McDonalds called it when they got their
hamburgerpapers etc. back ;-) Please note that this has actually happened.

Here it's better - if you set a piece of paper (or a marker - whatever you
want) on the mailbox (ie. "No ads, please!") the mailman will not put mass
mail in the box. For direct mails you can always contact the company in
question or if they got it from a larger source contact them. Recently you
can call a number and say no to getting phone calls from companys. So
except for e-mail we are secure, well the occasional vacuum cleaner seller
or Jehova (sp?) Witness are exceptions but they only come by once every 3-4
years here. Having a sign on the door that says "I read the Bible
backwards" might persuade them to not knock - well the "Witnesses" that is ;-)

BTW: I'm interested to see if the video/CD club that I've left two times
(June and July) will keep sending me movies, if they do I think I'll keep
the movie and see if they figure out I own them money ;-) (I actually got
Monkey Island III for free from another company when they did a thing like
that <g>)
