Unfortunately, there's an environmental cost to us all.
Incidentally, the electrical power requirements of "server farms" are
having a marked impact on their localities. They are usually concentrated
in close proximity to hubs, which are themselves at urban centers.
Publishers and other businesses are deluged by electronically delivered
PR handouts, from clueless staff to whom "megabyte" probably means
"burger". The bloated offerings stem from a misunderstanding of current
requirements for electronic documents, and the corporate desire to merge
documents for all media.
Unmetered-access ISPs in the UK are starting to fail, after less than a
year's existence. The advertising revenue couldn't keep 'em afloat. The
implications of spam (which I'll define as unwanted content) in our Inbox,
search engine results and pages we visit should have us all on our guard.
