Not so fast Steven. I think RPMs are great -for newbies
like me :)- with a program like Yast you can get things
easy in and out. Compiling is great for poweruser with
            ^^^ 
big HDs big Mem etc. not for old comps.

:) so it is. When you see a desktop like afterstep 
with a prompt in a transparent window you are traped
forever.
