<snip>

 W95 is exactly the same as W3.1 in the respect that it is a
GUI/operating environment running on top of DOS.

 To see this for yourself....
As soon as you see the message "Starting Windows 95", press the F8 key
[                               ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ]
[        that message is a lie  ||||||||||||||||||| ]
It's actually starting M$Dos v7.x (the same is also true in W98 and Wme)

With F8, you'll see a menu of choices. Choose "Command prompt only"

Now, you're in "pure DOS" :)
(as opposed to "impure dos" which is a DOS-BOX from within W95/98)

When you want to (truly) start W95/98..... win<enter>
(just as you used to do for W3.1)

 If you would like to always go to "pure DOS" when you boot.
Just edit MSDOS.SYS and change "BOOTGUI=1" to "BOOTGUI=0"
While you're at it, add this line.
LOGO=0

 This is exactly the same as we used to do by removing "win.com" from
autoexec.bat when we were using M$DOS version_whatever and W3.x

 I almost forgot to mention,

 Shutting down W95/98/me and "restarting in dos mode" is also "impure". ;-)
To see why... "mem /c" will show you that win.com is still in memory.
Which means that you have done nothing more that "shell to dos" from
within windows.
For further proof, exit the dos shell with "exit<enter>"
The message you'll see.... "Windows is now restarting".
(this is M$ admitting that they have lied to you by saying that
 you were "shutting-down" windows) ;-)
