Well I can't really test since I don't have a modem connected to my
computer anymore. But I think that this will work:
mode... (as I described earlier)
echo at... (as you described earlier)

You can't just ignore how to set the com-ports correctly when issuing such
a test. It would be just like testing if a car works and not having any gas
in, you wouldn't know if the car actually works or not since it will look
like it doesn't.

One could also use the method that Clarence have described.
