No... it won't. I run gpm 100% of the time on machine,
and I also run X at least 85% of the time. The two do not
interfere with each other.

I disabled gpm, and ran arachne-svgalib. The arachne
mouse was functional, and my X-mouse was still haywire.
This demonstrates two things:
1) that arachne-svgalib doesn't use gpm, and
2) that gpm is not at fault in screwing X's mouse.

This is purely a BUG in the way Arachne handles the mouse.
I've even seen strange character sets on other consoles
opened by different users while arachne-svgalib is running.
I may try the next arachne-svgalib if there have been
improvements in this area, but I've deleted the 1.66b version.
It's too dangerous.

I will continue to use arachne-ggi.
