Try the ESC key. During a download, it works as an Abort Download key
or a "Stop key" (Netscape style). You can also try to click on the X
mark on the tool-bar.
Btw - The ESC key also function as an Exit key when Arachne is idle and not
transfering anything (so dont be confused).

CTRL+break appears in the incorrect time. Its seposed to appear when
Arachne is compiling the JPG files, which is AFTER the download..
unfortunatly, it display this message when downloading the last file,
if the option for downloading multiple files at the same time is turned on.
When Arachne is compiling JPG/PNG files, you can abort the process
by pressing CTRL+Break

This shouldnt be happening. I'm using a previous version of Arachne,
and in it just like anywhere in the previous versions, ~ cause Arachne
to only process the HTML page, without downloading or attempting to
process the images. Either you are encountering a sort of a bug, or
it could be that you are mistaking the "image adjustment" process
to have anything to do with.. well, image adjustment. :)
