Press "O"
Link to "Preferences & Performance"
Uncheck the box for "auto download inline images"

2 sections furture down, Check <Esc> "ignored"

Scroll to the bottom of the page and link to "OK, Save"

On the next page, link to "Use new settings"

That's all there is to it.
>From now on, the Esc key will abort the current download and will be
ignored if a D/L is not in progress.

 And of course, you will now need to use the "insert" key or link to the
"Load images" Ikon to download the images.
