Few people remember that the original PC was designed to work with a
cassette tape drive, as well as disk drives.  (In typical IBM fashion,
however, the cable to connect your computer to an ordinary home cassette
recorder was something like $100.)  Hence it pretty much HAD to have
Cassette BASIC in ROM.  As someone said, I think the jr. had you plug in a
ROM cartridge for BASIC; same difference.  I was not sure if the XT still
made provision for a tape drive, but I suspect that by the time you had a
hard drive it was probably obvious you weren't going to be messing with a
cassette drive.
