there was usually an early DOS running on XTs, like 2.x or 3.x.
IBM computers had ROM basic. It was invoked if there was no OS found
when booting. Basic and cassette tape routines were removed later. Since
the AT the unused basic interrupts are in use for other things (second
HD controller).

Saw some CP/M clones on very ancient PC 1715 machines (Z80 processor at 4MHz,
64k RAM, 2 floppy drives with up to 810kB).There was no big difference
to early DOSes (indeed DOS includes many functions already to be found
in CP/M).There were early versions of Wordstar and dBase running.
