Actually I never finished the reinstall--just went ahead and installed
1.68 and that works just fine so far.
The Arachne website tells me though that I'm still using an old version
and should consider upgrading. Wonder why it says that.
I do have three different versions installed on the same drive and maybe
something is mixed up.

The other problem I've been having is an endless loop created sometimes
when I try to exit from telnet back to Arachne. It just won't unload and
the only way out is to reboot. That doesn't happen all the time though,
just some of the time and then not very often. Weird.
