Hi gangue,
The continuing saga of 1.44 plus. . . .
Well, here it is, Monday afternoon. So I've gotten the cheapo modem from
the local charity sale, and like I said, I've got it fired up and it's
connecting to rach just fine.
Sooooooh, let's go for it and get the latest version, at 1.67. Download
it and enter all the stuff, the Wizard seems to be working at long
last, and it fires up but only on surfing, no e-mail.
Scarper around for a few days, e-mail Clarence, try entries in
autoexec.bat, e-mail Michael for a new registration key, still zilch!
Uninstall, clean our arachne directory and delete. Re-install 167. Still
the same. More e-mails to Clarence.
Clean it all out again, in the meantime, Michael has done it again and
version 168 is on the go. Download 168, TO FLOPPY this time, and make
doubly sure Arachne directory is clean. RD it just to make sure and
empty Win trashcan also.
By now it's a week later, another Manic Monday, but I'm off work to-day
(supposedly doing wallpapering and painting for her who must be obeyed)
[I know my place L.D.] Get an hour to myself, load it all up, follow
through on the install and fire it up.
Eureka!!!! it's working, surfing ok on HDD, and the net. Let's try e-mail.
Double Eureka!!!! (that's Eureka!!!!, Eureka!!!! folks) it's picking up
e-mail.
What's this? #2 e-mail from Michael?
Announcing new 1.69 with 1.68 big fixes! Just when I've got the d*$n
thing working as well! As usual, Michael does it to me again. I've been
thinking of visiting Prague for the city scenery sometime in the next
year. If I doo, you're gonna be buying the beers Michael, that's for
sure!
Oh well here we go again. Download 1.69 to HDD and install. ZILCH. Clean
out arachne and delete. Download 1.69 to FLOPPY! Now install. Hot knife
slicing through butter! Connect first time, e-mail first time! Let's
hope it stays stable and settles down.
I will leave it on the machine for a few days, then I'll start my
changes for a few other ISP's and acf files.
Take care gangue, life does sometimes seem better.
Regards
Mel
