I've been using the TPG NiteRider lately - anytime between 1am
and 8am for free. just have to go to their website and register and
it's done. Of course I don't directly dial up with Arachne (couldn't be
bothered to move the modem) but do it from linux and IP_Masq
through the network, so one must assume it will work.

Oh, and Arachne would work with my univesity's modems, but
can't access anything that required the use of the proxy server
(which was anything outside of *.usq.edu.au and a few others). But
authentication was the problem and I haven't tried the newer
versions that are supposed to support it.

Doesn't Telstra limit a local call to ~10 days? That's what I read in
a magazine. I have never hit this limit since I have to share my data
and voice. :(

My unlimited ISP (hotkey) is close - $AU42.50/month inc GST so
that's about $20 US. But they got uppitty when I downloaded 1GB
in one month, so I've been meaning to change, but most places
need a credit card, or are too expensive for my >100 hours/month
usage. Some places still charge more than $3/hr!

All in all, with a standard PPP account, Arachne is almost
guaranteed to be able to use it. (So this excludes the likes of AOL)
