basic ... fast ???? hmmmm interesting
and assembler is MUCH to cumbersome for modern processors and big projects.

AND there are big problems with hand written assembler on new intel CPUs.
(you can ruin your performance with Merced or Pentium4 ... optimizing
compilers do usually a better job)

What's about functional languages like ProLog or LISP ??

Go for Perl if you need an interpreted language.
