Harry,

I'm not a wizard, just an ordainary Arachne user. While I'm duly
appreciative of technical expertise, it's not necessary to know
anything about the protocols in order to get Arachne connected.

The easiest way is to let Arachne do the work. It's already set
up for PAP/CHAP logins. PAP/CHAP is a way to automate PPP logins
to an ISP.

The traditonal way to login was through "terminal mode". This is
like calling a BBS. You manually enter your username and password
at the prompts and then should see "garbage characters" on the
screen. These are PPP packets. Hitting F7 or Alt-p would then
switch you into PPP mode and connect you.

Arachne can use a script to automate this process for you. Scripts
can be confusing for ordainary users like myself. PAP/CHAP does
away with the need for manual or scripted logins and handles the
process automatically.

You dial in to the ISP and a dialog is initiated that passes your
username and password to the ISP and then establishes the PPP
connection for you.

Arachne can be set up to login to an ISP in any of these three ways.

Most ISP's now accept PAP/CHAP logins. Many also accept manual and
scripted logins. The automatic PAP/CHAP login is the easiest. The
method Steve described will set up Arachne for an automatic login.
No editing of Arachne.cfg or script creation is required.

Go to the Options page by touching the "O" hotkey, click on TCP/IP
setup, click on Internal PPP setup, fill in the blanks with your
username and password. Make sure that the "Show Terminal" and "Try
Following Script" boxes are * not * checked. Make sure the phone number
and DNS numbers are filled in and correct. Click on save.

That should do it. There are other ways to accomplish this
task. You can edit arachne.cfg manually or you can use the installation
wizard.
