Thanks for the Necromancer tip. I tried to reach their site to find
out more because I'm really interested. Still no success (not unusual in
case of Russian site).
No mystery why DN (the RITLabs one) can't run on some newer computers;
it's written in Turbo Pascal (I think there's a patch for TP6 somewhere on
the Web, but all I have been able to find until now were broken links...).
Now for a total change of subject:
I wonder if there is something new with the Linux development of
Arachne. I think she may be particularly useful on older machines. My
computer has only 16 megs of RAM (legacy 72-pin SIMM's). It can't use EDO,
so there's little hope I'll ever be able to increase its memory size.
Netscape runs very slow under X-Window, even using a lightweight window-
manager as Fvwm. Enlightement is barely usable (this prevented me to use
the ggi versionof Arachne) , so the only options that I've got are Lynx
and, of course, Arachne-svgalib. I think this I'm not the only one having
to cope with such "rough environment" ;-). Also I remember that a
significant leap in increasing the stability of the DOS version, took
place at the time when the Linux version was released.
I try to use the Linux version of Arachne, almost every evening, but the
most annoyimg bug is that, often, when I click on a link (plain HTTP type)
I get the "Arachne Load Error" page. As a workaround I usually go back to
the previous page, exit Arachne with Alt-X (finding lots of "can't execute
mouse thread" messages on my console), then start again with "-r" option.
Most times the problematic page will load.
Finally after lots of Arachne collapses and returns, I feel like
collapsing too, and I give up.
Next evening, while reading my mail for instance, I stumble across an
interesting link and there we go again.
At least, this bug should be fixed, along with adding a decent
capability of browsing the disk contents and that should be enough for the
releasing of a new version :-)
P.S. I wonder if Arachne can be made to handle gpm type copy and paste.
Under Linux ,and using gpm, one simply highlights the text to copy using
the mouse, (no matter where on the console) then, by pressing the middle
button of the mouse, the text is inserted at cursor position.
This is an example of what's on the lower portion of my screen right now
(the signature, along with the Pine context menu (!) copied in one mouse
move):
