This is simply wrong ...

there are no different facilities ...
there is a smtpd (sendmail, qmail, ...) listening on usually port 25.
If a program (telnet, arachne, outlook, ...) opens a connection smtpd
handles it.
It doesn't care which program opened the connection, and it doesn't matter
...
