that tells you, that LINUX (the kernel) can't find your filesystem.

I don't know that linux distribution, but I guess it uses loadlin.
than you have to tell the kernel (usually vmlinuz) which device is your
root partition

there should be a programm called rdev.exe ... simply involve it without
parameters, and you get a help.

sure ... it didn't even know where to look for your harddisk, so it can't
even load your parition.
Exactly this was the reason for the error message. (here called kernel
panic)

The computer did _NOT_ lock up.
The kernel started, and tried to load (mount) your root partition, and
because of wrong configuration, it could not find thw HDD, and therfor
can't go on processing.

So the kernel is in panic, because it can't continue booting.

_BUT_ the kernel told you so ... simply read the message !

SH> What did I do wrong?
tell linux where it can find it's root partition.
(containing /etc, /var/log, /bin, /sbin ...)

these strange mini linux distributions are usually very outdated. (though I
don't know this special distri)
if you update some libraries this should be possible.

_BUT_ if this distribution uses UMSDOS, than it's nothing but a toy !!
running linux on a FAT filesystem is ........... no comment ;)
It's only good for the first steps ..
