Oh ... than basiclinux runs completely in a ramdisk ...
interesting ... but now the chances of you being able to run arachne are
not so good any more ...

interesting ... it SHOULD find your root FS.
Are you sure, that all files are intact ??
(especially baslinux.gz)
you only need rdev, if you start linux from a HDD partition

sure ....
but I have to admit, that I also have no clue, what is causing it ...
(maybe you can send me the baslinux.gz and zImage file, and I will try if
it works here ...)
Maybe some linux guru has an explanation.

it did not lock up.
Loadlin completely wiped out dos from your memory, and switched to
protected mode. (from now on, ctrl-c can't work, because it can't return to
dos ...)
than it starts loading the kernel ....
THAN it wants to load its root fs ... (eg in this case load baslinux.gz
into ram, decompress it, and use it as root fs.)
and because of some strange reasons it is not able to do so ...
it has no options .. it can't fall back to dos, because there is no dos.
it can't cotinue the booting process, because it can't find the necessary
files (on the root fs)
the only thing it could do is reboot, but than you wouldn't see the error
message.
So it panics, and tells you the reason for it, and waits that you press
ctrl-alt-delet
but it has not crashed ... :)

this is the strange thing ...
the files are in compressed form in baslinux.gz
but because of some strange reasons linux kernel can't load them.

We will make it work ... there are many people here knowing much more than
I ... they will help you !
(UMSDOS is a driver. With its help you are able to boot linux from a fat
partition ... maybe you should try such a distribution ...
chances of arachne linux running on it are much higher, becaue you can
expand that system ... with basiclinux you are stuck with what you load
into ram ...)
