I had been asked to compare disk caching software called Hyperdisk under
the same conditions I used for Lightning, Ncache, NWcache, PC-Cache and
Smartdrv. I'm afraid the requistioner isn't going to be happy. :(
I finally downloaded the Speedkit set containing Hyperdisk. (HYPERDKX)
The download was 436,633 bytes to get the 45968 Hyperdkx.
The only thing hyper about this software is the author's imagination.
It was a bit difficult to install, and is the ONLY caching software
tested that did not have built-in command syntax help. There was a
100kb+ txt document that had to be sifted for clues, and most of the
command references were to hotkeys. Like we're gonna drive this cache
like a sports car every time we use it ? No examples.
I had to let the main package installer mess with my system files to
get a clue how to run it. That was another first in this test series.
After finally getting the proper command line, I made a pair of time
tests with speedchk exactly as before, on the same empty hard drive.
There are two nag screens at bootup because the author wants money.
HyperDisk was BY FAR the slowest caching software tested.
Previously, Smartdrv was the slowest, but only 10% slower than Lightning,
the fastest. HyperDisk tested almost 20% slower than Smartdrv !
