Arachne Wizards:
I am still trying to get Arachne 1.69 to link successfully
with my ISP. Although Steve Fox, my ISP Sysop, has given me some
good and helpful information, it's still not working. I suspect
the trouble is something obvious -- once it's found. Here are
some questions I have:
(1) My AUTOEXEC.BAT consists of only two instructions,
namely:
@ECHO OFF
PROLOG
where PROLOG.BAT contains the instructions normally found
in AUTOEXEC.BAT. I adopted this practice as a defense
against software packages which alter the contents of
AUTOEXEC.BAT when they are installed. Does ARACHNE need
to scan AUTOEXEC.BAT when it runs? If so, then it's very
unlikely that it will even bother to look at PROLOG.BAT.
(2) What are the conventions for writing/editing ARACHNE.CFG?
I assume that blank lines are ignored, but are comments
always preceded by a semicolon? I assume that "\u" and
"\p" following "Response1" and "Response2" imply output-
ting the PPPusername and PPPpassword, but is a carriage
return code appended to these outputs -- or should there
be? And, if there should be, is there a code, such as
"\r", to indicate such a return?
(3) I note in my ARACHNE.CFG file (appended to this message)
what appear to be commented-out instructions, such as:
;Connection @cmd ... command cmd will establish connection
;Connection READY ... connection is permanent, packet driver in AUTOEXEC...
;Connection NUL ... do not start TCP/IP (run "arachne -c" to force this)
;IP_Address n.n.n.n ... fixed IP address
;IP_Address PPP ... for PPP.EXE and PPPD.EXE (get address from PPP.LOG)
;IP_Address BOOTP ... WatTcp attempts to use BOOTP protocol
;IP_Address %enviro% ... Minuet style (environment variable, like %MYIP%)
;IP_Address WATTCP ... use ONLY values from TCPconfig (variable "my_ip")
;IP_Grab string ... prefix of IP address in PPP.LOG ("IP address set to")
;TCPconfig filename ... name of WatTcp configuration file (often WATTCP.CFG)
Should I have removed the semicolon from one of these
lines in order to activate one of these instructions?
If so, which ones? And do the "..." marks indicate
comments ignored by ARACHNE?
In the event I can't get ARACHNE to link to my ISP, I've
downloaded the Klos PPP package. However there is no documentation
in that package on how to use Klos PPP with ARACHNE. Do any of you
use Klos; if so, can you show me what I have to do in my CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to use Klos? And what changes would I make
to my ARACHNE.CFG file?
I am very impressed at the professional quality I see in ARACHNE
as it runs on my computer, including the help files and the fact that
it processes and displays HTML files I've downloaded using my local
public library computers. However, the most important thing now is
to get ARACHNE to link with my ISP. Your help in achieving this will
be very greatly appreciated.
