I'm really not sure what the 553 error is about. I just sent Sam
a test message using Arachne 1.70 and, although he hasn't replied
yet, so far it hasn't bounced.

In this case you couldn't use AUTH even if you wanted to. AUTH
would only be used between you and your ISP's smtp server, not
between you and Sam's mailserver (and all the mailservers in
the world). Also, if you used a smarthost (your ISP's smtp
server) to send the e-mail, the session above would have taken
place between your smarthost and Sam's mailserver. I believe
that people are being overly paranoid about this AUTH business.

Anyway, you could try sending the message again, and maybe send
me a test as well, so I can see the full headers, which I don't
get on the digest. It might give us a clue.
